Which choke for trap?

Postby shooter on Sat May 21, 2011 11:12 am

How do you guys like your guns choked for 16yd Trap? I wouldn't call myself a rookie, but I'm a lot closer to that than expert.

Choke for smoke! I started with a Modified, switched to a Full after a few months and my scores seemed to improve. Whenever I try to use a Modified it seems like I lax up and loose focus. Trap is such a mental game. IMO try mod, imp mod, full, etc...find what works best and stick with it. Heck if you get on the target fast enough you could even open it up from modified.

I shoot sporting clays and use IC for everything, Including 60- 75 yd Duck tower stuff. I know Trap guy's like to use full, and I believe that or Modified would be best.

I always have shot with modified choke. I have a 23 average so far for the year so seems to work good for me.

Modified or tighter, depends on the gun, the load, and type of wad.

also depends a lot on your shooting style.

do you like to break the clay close to the trap house or let it get down range a little further before pulling the trigger?

once again, there is no "best for everyone".

My gun goes with a full or modified choke and I don't see much difference in my scores either way.

If shooting registered targets, its Modified for 16 yard birds and handicap back to about 21 yards. Further back and I switch to Imp Mod. or Full depending on what gun and load I am using. When shooting league 16 yard Singles I most often use Light Mod with 7/8 oz of 8s and break them close to the house. 23+ is typical for registered shoots, 22 for league. It would also help if I kept my mind on the game, I find shooting clays to be less interesting every year.

Previous posters have said all good things. One more to add is that the pattern will depend on steel vs lead shots as well.

Take some kraft paper and pattern your shotgun with different choke.

You want 50% of you pattern inside a 16" circle at like 20 yards.

Different chokes will give different patterns.

Did that and my avg for skeet went up to 23-24

Another modified shooter here, plus it's what I use for hunting and what I'm most used to for distance.

I like full, but i am slower to shoot and full helps with the range. I was shooting 21-24...
