SBR owners

I'm curious how many people actually own SBRs on here.

I've been thinking about getting one. One of my friends arguments why he only builds AR pistols is that he doesn't want to be on a special registry. I've told him I'm already on a list for buying firearms so if they're coming for them, it's just one more for them to want to collect. On top of that I highly doubt any CLEO of mine will sign off on it (St. Louis Park AND Henn. Co.) So I'd have to go the trust route.

Were these things a factor in anyone else's decision? Or was it just something you didn't worry about?

I have one. I'm not sure how much help I can be. You seem to already know most of this.

I'm sure you've read form1 so you know it can be the chief of police, sheriff, head of the state police, state or local DA/Prosecutor. Or anyone else the BATFE finds acceptable. Don't just assume none of these folks will sign it. Ask them first. Start at chief and work you way though the list. You can just tell the next one that the last guy wouldn't sign it for personal reasons.

If that doesn't work. Besides the trust route you can also transfer to a business entity. So if you have "dsm2nr LLC" You could register the sbr to your company.

Also off topic.... Don't be afraid to call the BATFE NFA division. The same questions you might have have been asked a million times. Don't take advice from the internet. The most common source of argument is how to measure the SBR. They will tell you.

I own one. With respect to the CLEO sign-off, just contact your local agencies and ask them. They may or may not sign off but at least you'll know. I lucked out and the Chief in Blaine signed for me. If he hadn't, then I would have went Trust. I might still go trust as it's just easier.

With respect to being on a list, you're friend is deluded if he thinks that he owns guns and isn't already on a list of some sort. Plus an AR pistol isn't nearly as much fun as an SBR with a stock.

Paying a $200 tax on a SBR is not nearly as fun as the accessories/ammo it can buy if you stuck with an AR Pistol. If it ever becomes legal, or SHTF, $200 buys a nice stock too.

I would agree. Most of the accessories that I would look to put on an SBR or AR pistol are equal to or more than $200 (i.e. optic + mount, good weaponlight + mount, rail, etc.) so I could maybe slide one in for the cost of the stamp.

With respect to the $200, save up for two or three months by not buying tobacco/booze/fast food/*insert other guilty pleasure here* and you won't even disrupt your normal budget. I sold some junk off that I never used anymore and had the money that way.

If the CLEO seems relaxed, just reply "zombies"... no I'm kidding - however I have seen a signed Form 1 with that on it.

I believe I said for collection or something along the lines of range toy. - I still have to mail mine in.

The caned response on the form1 seems to be "Enhance Collection" I'm not sure what I put on mine. I'd have to look.

Unfortunately when getting the CLEO signature you need to know your audience and maybe even pucker up a bit.

I always put this down when asked:

"For all lawful purposes and collecting"


Like someone said, it doesn't hurt to donate to local police charities or to get to know someone in the local LEO. Personally, I am going through Minnetonka Police and they said they don't remember the last time someone put in a request for Form 1 signature. I wouldn't be too surprised if I get rejected, but I would understand it as I have not had the chance to get to know Minnetonka police (this is good or bad).

If I get rejected, I will probably ask the Sheriff's office as my father-in-law works as a volunteer and I voted for the man so that is a bit closer.
