Want to Buy an AR-15. *PICS PG 8*

Postby stesch_s10 on Sat Jun 18, 2011 5:39 pm

Alright So, with the recent wedding I have come about a large amount of money.. and now is the time for me to buy/build my AR15 that I have been wanting for quite some time.

Purpose: I'd like to hunt with this gun. Coyote, Coon, Rabbit, Prairie Dog. I'd also like to just take it out to the range and shoot like any other gun nut on here.

I have been reading about them and would like a little input on this upper receiver I found. It is a gas operated (I've heard they are more money but in some peoples eyes better to have).

http://www.modarmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=51&products_id=293

Since this is my first AR I don't want to go CRAZY with everything. I'd like to start off sort of basic so that I can tear it apart and clean and learn and if I damage something.. I won't be kicking myself because I just busted a very expensive part.

any input on that upper would be great. As for the lower... I dunno what I want to do.

spikes work.

if you have a lot of money, get a complete gun and avoid any human error headaches in setup. Which, aren't many, but are possible.

You mean "piston" operated. All AR's are/were originally gas operated, but weren't designed with a piston, unless I've missed my history lesson. Personally I'm not sold on either one. Both work, neither is a clear winner, or else there'd only be one or the other. (A lot like 1911's and GLOCKS... oops, I said it.)

If it was me with a lot of money, I'd be finding a Colt as my first real AR. But Spikes, BCM, and all the other high dollar brands would work too. Don't confuse price with quality too much though. Lots of "you're just buying a hood ornament" goes on with buying different brands of AR's.

Don't buy a Piston AR.

The inventor of the Adams Arms/CMMG/Spikes piston AR systems will flat out tell you that it's a waste of time, if you ask him. It just doesn't confer any real advantages over a direct impingment rifle unless you are running a sub 10 inch barrel AND a suppressor.

Your primary purpose for this rifle seems to be hunting, and for that, I'd say, that at least for your first AR, you want something with a 18 inch or longer heavy barrel, no chrome lining, and a match trigger.

DPMS 18 inch guns have carbine length gas systems. This is unacceptable. The carbine gas system was designed to work on Colt Commandos, which have 11.5 inch barrels. It's adapted fairly well to 14.5 inch M4 length guns, but there's good evidence that even guns with barrels that short benefit from the 9 inch gas system of a midlength gas system. 16 inches on a carbine gas system is pretty much the upper limit.

If I were you, I'd get a good single stage match trigger, on a carbine style AR lower, and a 18 inch SPR style upper.

This upper is only going to be a little more expensive than the one you linked, after you buy a bolt carrier group for it.

It will be more accurate than the Spikes upper you linked, and won't, when paired with a quality BCG, give up anything in terms of reliability. Weight will be similar.

As far as stocks go, pick something that has a friction lock on it.

Then, later, you can buy a pinned and welded 14.5 or a 16 inch middy with chrome lining and a pencil barrel for tactical stuff.

Nothing wrong with the "right" DPMS, but, while I don't know that it necessarily applies when you can get a rifle for dealer cost, there are other rifles that will be nicer or more dependable in a very similar price range, depending on which DPMS you choose.

very true.. reason i chose the lite 16 is i've shot one of those and they seemed like a good gun.. So i dunno what the advantage or disadvantage would be to all the different types... i know some have different barrels and whatnot...

The Remington's give you a camo finish, which is a double ++ IMO. A flat top, so you can mount your optic choice - and here is where the money should be going. Buy good optics and save yourself from buying twice.

The round free float vented handguard is great. PRI rail sections fit onto these perfectly and you can mount accessories if you feel the need. Burris XTR low rings and Fenix TK15 light get the job done.

The stock is a personal choice, but if your not wearing thick armor, my opinion is stay with the A2 stock, and skip over the 6 postion.

20" heavy barrels give you the extra FPS, but the carbines can be carried all day, and unless you plan on shooting over 300 yds all the time, the carbine will serve you well. Buy a weight set, not a heavy bbl and be :yippee:

Stick with the old faithful direct impingement gas system. Blue Force Gear Vickers slings are ++.

Remington Model R15 with 18" carbine bbl.

So something like this is what you're after? From the thread title this was the first thing I thought of:
