I got a real problem here... Thoughts needed.

AR vs Remington 700, .223 vs .308, I wound up with a Saiga .308 .

If you are going with an AR and want to have strong resale value- Colt, LMT, Bushie, RRA, Noveske. If you want to build or buy a cheap blaster - try anybody/everybody else.

The .308 AR's can be very accurate. They are also heavy, and more expensive to feed than the smaller (.223) guns, and you will need to find 5 round mags to hunt with in most jurisdictions. The comment on Knight/ DPMS pattern mags is right on as well.

care to share where that 5 round mag info is and in what state?

I've heard this more than once. I've never seen any evidence that its true. Anybody?

New hampshire has a 5 round maximum capacity rule for semiauto firearms for big game hunting, as does Michigan and Oregon, Missouri limits you to 10 rounds, I'm sure there are others, but that's all I got from the first page of Google.

Minnesota used to have a mag capacity in the statutes, but it dissapeared somewhere around 10 years ago.

I remember that it was part of MN law at one point, and while its not in the current regulations (meaning the small book you get where you buy the license), I don't recall it being removed either, as in being stated in the changes section that more than 5 rounds were now allowed.

In WY I was told 5 rounds for big game. I was also told this in AZ, but that may have been an outfitter's rule, I didn't see it in the state regs.

I don't need 30 rounds, I only need one. But that 1 can come from a 30-round mag just as easily as a 5-round. Why should I have to buy a special mag for hunting?

You and some other people may not need 30 rounds. There are some special people out there and others that, well to put it nicely, not everything is on upstairs that would either voluntarily or involuntarily abuse a privilege of being allowed 30 rounds in one magazine. And just like you said that one round can come just as easily from a 5 round magazine as a 30 round mag. I get where your coming from but unfortunately we have to consider the idiots when we make laws/rules/guidelines.

10rd AR mags are the same length as 5's and I got a 5 thinking it'd be reliable, and it isn't... Should've got a 10, since it'd be better for bench shooting off bags.

The reason NOT to have a 30 in the field is simple - it's a banana sticking out the bottom of the gun. If you use a shooting stick, or shoot standing: it doesn't matter. If you rest on the rail of a stand, you might be hosing yourself with that (unnecessary) extra capacity sticking out of the gun. If you carry an extra mag in the field, then you're hauling around a much bigger object than you need to.

What I said before is what I meant - I don't want to be anywhere near someone who needs 30rds to hit a deer. It wasn't directed at anyone here. We still don't need a law!


Btw, I think the intent of the mag capacity limit for water fowl is to prevent you from shooting more than your limit in the heat of the moment.

Thats why I intend to get a 20 round or less mag for hunting.. cause I could see myself getting pissed when i gotta get down to take a shot and that friggin 30 round is now my pivot point on my gun.

It may have been put crudely, but mrp is 100% on point, and correct. Limiting the number of rounds a safe & careful person may carry while hunting is analogous to limiting the number of rounds a law abiding person may carry for self-defense. The limits are designed to make the reckless & careless (or the criminals, in the second half of the analogy) less likely to hurt others or damage property. But they are not effective since the reckless & careless (or criminals) can & will do damage with one shot - and may well ignore the law anyway - while the safe & careful / law abiding folks will be unduly limited in their ability to best prepare as they see fit for whatever scenarios they envision.

This is what happens every time a law is passed that "considers the idiots" - it restricts the freedom of those who obey the law & act rationally, while failing to prevent "the idiots" from doing whatever the hell it is the idiots want to do. Stop trying to limit my freedom just so you can pretend you've done something to make yourself or others "safe" - it doesn't work...
