Moving to MN

Postby JeepMJ on Tue Jun 28, 2011 11:09 pm

Hello all,

My name is Tim. I'm a Californian, born and raised...til now! I'm moving up to Hibbing for school/work in a couple months and suffice it to say, I am glad to be getting out of this hell hole.

As you might be aware, California is not kind to gun owners. As such, I'll need some help and inspiration on what to do with all my new freedoms. I look forward to being a contributing member of this forum.

Thanks,
Tim

P.S.
If someone could give me a quick run-down of requirements for new MN citizens to purchase firearms (such as any waiting periods before I can buy my first rifle/shotgun/handgun), as well as bring my firearms from CA to MN, I would really appreciate it

Welcome!

No registration here in MN. Bring the collection, and buy standard size mags for it all once you're here. :D

Once you are settled, you have two options for purchase. Standard rifles and shotguns are no permit required. Handguns and "assault rifles" require either a purchase permit or carry permit. No waiting period.

Purchase permit: free, good for one year, obtained from local police department. Should take 7 days from application to issuance.

Carry permit: requires class, costs $100 in most counties, good for five years, takes up to 30 days. Obtained from sheriff of your county.

You'll find that although there is some silliness here re: loaded long guns in vehicles, suppressors, etc, our laws will be a breath of fresh air compared to where you're coming from. 8-)

Make your life easy, get your MN driver's license ASAP once you're here so you can start the fun stuff.

No loaded guns in vehicles? I assume that is unless you have a carry permit, correct? I can deal with that... not like I carry loaded guns in my truck out here in CA anyway.

Well...no haha. I've been to MN several times during the winter and some pretty damn cold ones I might add. If I recall correctly, it reached about 25-30 below a couple of the days I was there several years back. The wind chill is what really kills me. I suppose thats what gets everybody though.

But...shooting in that weather? I'll probably pass haha.

I'm not huge on hunting so that won't be a problem. I wouldn't mind going out once in a while, but I didn't grow up with guns so it was never instilled in me as a kid. But yeah, I was out there two years ago in May and even though it was 30-40 degrees every day, there was zero wind. I was outside in a T-shirt and jeans...thats my kind of weather

First, welcome!

Second, you'll love it here gun-wise. I moved here from Massachusetts six years ago and I'm not going back.

As Mark says, there's a bit of silliness, but all in all, a damn fine place to live as a gunowner. And the Norwegian girls aren't bad either ;)

Welcome aboard. Lived in San Diego for a couple of years while I was a member of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. Moved back to MN after I got out, and haven't regretted it.

Loaded LONG guns. ;)

Pistol, you're good to go with a permit. It's just that the DNR retains (or at least claims to) some measure of control over the transport of long guns. You can carry a loaded AR down the street with your permit, just load it AFTER you get out of your car.

Just note that many places will not sell firearms to you without an MN DL or ID.

This is legally correct, but be aware that in the real world a cop may not know that.
