If he's in AK, they'll issue him something. If he wants something to carry off duty, besides what he's issued, get a .44, or a short barreled 12 gauge. .357 isn't big enough for what he'll be seeing on a regular basis.

.357M is a great all-arounder but I agree with Drizzle. Up in AK it's too mild for most things with 4 feet. If his concern is more social in nature then the TRR8 is the way to go if fiscally feasable otherwise the 686 plus, his choice of barrel length (6 in for me) is a good alternative. After that the Ruger would be fine but I prefer S&W triggers.

I know this is not what you asked for, but when I had to deal with such things, the bush pilots seemed to wear these in pretty good numbers.

I presumed, as he was with the WI DNR, he knew his ****, what he wanted, and what it's fer ... but, as this is quickly turnin' into 'nother Kodiak Killer thread, here's couple more options ...

I'd personally go with the 3in .44 (jest a favorite of mine 8-) ) ...

... but I'm sure all the experts'll say ya can't save yer skin with such a puny gun  ... so here ya go! ...

he can get a new 357 with a 4" barrel and 6 round cylinder for under $500 on Gunbroker, all day long. Stainless too...

Unfortunately I have to agree. You can get some pretty good revolvers from Taurus well under what a S&W, etc would cost.

I was thinking about mentioning a Smith 500 snubbie, but decided I didn't want to sound like a broken record. So somebody beats me to it!! :x :x :x

I guess the real question should be asked of his new DNR manager in Alaska as to what percentage of the time he's going to be nabbing poachers, and what percentage of the time is he going to be mooching around in the alder thickets acting like a potential snack for an Alaskan brown bear. Got a friend with property in Cordoba, and he says most of the locals carry short barreled 12 gauges, but if you're going to spend time in the brush you CANNOT have too much gun, so the Smith 500 kinda wins hands down. And he wants the 4" snubbie and not the 2 3/4" - the velocity degradation with the 2 3/4" is enough to lessen your chances or survival.

Or how much time he'll be sitting behind a desk filling out paperwork. ;)

Same thing when I was in the Nome area. 12 gauge carried with a sling loaded with slugs. Loaded full with slugs. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Handy to have some bird shot in the pocket in case you find some ptarmigan while out and about. Mmmmm, good eating around the camp fire.
