Also keep in mind, there is more to a scope than just glass, to me the integrity of the internal mechanics are almost if not just as important. A good scope should pass a box test, you would be amazed how bad some scopes are with this.

I used a similar chart when I was shopping for dSLR lenses.

It will be night and day difference at times what you will see. The ability to see the finer lines in some of the better glass is incredible. It works for any optics that you might want to use.

And some of that big money stuff isn't as good as the more inexpensive stuff.

That's why I say use the chart and go shopping. You'll be amazed what you see.

Do you have a certain procedure or protocol when using this? (e.g., print on 8x11.5 paper, place at 10 feet, set scope on 6 power, etc)

I downloaded the nikon resolution chart.

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/conten ... rmance.htm

Just one place for it.

It's also referred to as the ISO 12233 chart.

Check out Snipershide.com and AR15.com for used Leupy's. You should be able to snag a VX3 4.5-14x50, 30mm tube, side focus with Varmint or B&C reticle for $600 (less on a good day). A used Mark 4 is gonna set you back $700, more if you want M1 or M3 knobs.

If you want to see how they look and feel, I've got 3.5-10x41, 4.5-14x50, and 6.5-20x40 set up on long range bolt guns.

I have one of those Simmons Whitetail Classic scopes on my Marlin XL7 and it looks pretty good to me but I'm also an uber-noob when it comes to rifles.

Thanks!...However...

How does this help me pick out a scope? It seems that unless these results are posted, All I can do is perform one after I've made a purchase and then get pissed (or be happy)... :)

What are your opinions on the 4.5-14 vs the 6.5-20? Assuming they were the same objective, which one would you prefer if you could only have one?

Depends on your intended use. To punch little groups in paper, higher magnification is good. For hunting higher magnification means smaller field of view. I tend to hunt always on the lowest power on a scope.

No one has mentioned swift scopes. I have two and they are tough as nails and have a good warranty. Never had to use that though. Great for the money. The Wolfs Den in hugo is a dealer.

Make sure you actually see and compare before buying. This is the only thing that I think goose hill is good for. Check them out there and buy elsewhere for way less... not saying, just saying... ;)

Probably the 4.5-14. It's easily good to 400 yards, 600 if you and the gun are good. Never took a shot at a deer more than 235 yards away, so I figure that's good enough 8-) .

The 6.5-20 is for varmints ;) .

What is the downside of going 6-20 vs 4-16? You loose a little on the low side for close shots, but besides that? Are the optics apt to be less clear? I read some thread saying better glass at lower mag is superior to high mag with weak glass for long rang shooting...Any truth?

Also, Any experience here with the sightrons?

Is this overkill? Should I get the 3-15x50?
