At the Fleet Farm where I buy my cans, the dumb kids in the sporting goods department have been throwing away the can openers because they didn't know what they were. I tried using a regular can opener, but the ones we have are not sharp and strong enough to penetrate the lid. Maybe an old American-made can opener that has some heft to it would be up to the task.
I ended up useing the screwdriver and hammer method for the first few inches. I got nervous about it because some of the rounds are sitting bottom-up next to the sides of the can. If you mess up and hit a primer, you will probably not have a very good day. The metal top is relatively thin, so I used a pair of tin snips to continue opening up the top far enough to get the packages out. I think it took me about five minutes to do that, so it wasn't too bad.
