Customer service at Colt is saying that it is caused by the environment that it was stored in (Humidity. According to them Humidity can cause this kind of damage to the finish and the metal pitting on the upper and lower receiver.

Is what they are telling me true?

humidity, dis-similar metals. Yeah, it's all possible. Especially if it was kept in a metal gun safe.

Without seeing it in person though....

Whats the best way to cut my losses on this now? I am think about just asking them to send it back and refinishing it myself and keep it as a beater AR-15 or just selling it for what I paid for it. They did test it and it functions properly, so that is a good thing.

That is what I was thinking. I wonder if someone could fill in the deep pitting and grind it down so I could refinish it?

Honestly, some form of patching compound and a strip/refinish with duracoat job is probably in order.

Otherwise you could try to locate reasonably priced stripped upper/lower receivers and swap parts which may be safer and provide a better end result? I know Aero/Surplus arms had a pretty good price on a matched set for under $150 recently... I can feel the death stares from the Colt crew now though. (this is to be a beater/shooter, right?)

For 275 they said that they would "refinish" it. it sounded like they would bead blast it and refinish over the affected area and leave the craters.
