You wrote this on Sat morning so does tmrw mean Sat or Su? :P

Hopefully someone else will chime in on this as I only ever sighted one in years ago and then switched to optics.
If you dont have the little front sight adjustment tool a small punch or nail etc to push in the detent on the sight and then turn with a needle nose pliers or such.

Rear sight info should be on the internet somewhere, Battle field adjustment was like bottom out the rear sight make POI adjustments with the front sight and then return the rear sight to to whatever yardage you wanted to shoot or something similiar.

FWIW, if ya got one of these ...

Image

... and a good 300yd+ view out the window, ya can remove the BCG, clamp it in, center the bore on something 300yd+, and then adjust the sights to the same point ... no wasted ammo ... and by the time ya get back to the range, ya s/b within a few inches @100yd! Image

Once ya get to the range, and ya need to adjust, here's a calculator to help cipher how far to adjust ... probly not very much! 'Less yer a purdy good shot with open sights, ya could end up only makin' it worse.

When ya bore-sight, don't pick a point much shorter 'n 300yd or ya'll be over the top of the target!

Where are you located? I am rather green myself but I have a front sight tool and have sighted in a couple ARs.

Edit: I figured out BPR and realize we are on the other side of the world from each other.

better front sight tool. For guys like me who's fingers won't fit in there to turn the post while the detent rod is pushed down.

I picked up my front sight tool at Fleet Farm locally.

Lots of good info via Google, I'd never sighted in an AR15 before but with a bit of research and a finishing nail I was able to sight in two of them with a box of ammo each. It's a really good idea to understand how to zero your sights if you're going to shoot irons (as a new iron shooter as well) - I'm sure you're up to if if you assembled the rifle yourself! I'm a fan of the A1 style sight system as it's significantly simpler to zero and harder to botch later on (perhaps less precise though) and went with the Daniel Defense A1.5 RBUIS on my BCM 16" carbine.

That said, since you have an A2 sight system already here's a pretty simple guide:

As others have suggested you can use a number of different instruments to adjust the sights.

M16A2Image

If you have an A2 you can use this target http://www.bobdbob.com/~deneb/doc/targets/m16a2-25m-zero.pdfto sight in your AR.

M16A1 Image

(1) Mechanically Zeroing the M16A1. Mechanically zeroing the M16A1 (Figure 2-2) is only necessary when the weapon zero is questionable, the weapon is newly assigned to the unit, or the weapon sights have been serviced. If necessary, the soldier should mechanically zero the weapon as follows:

(a) Adjust the front sight post (1) up or down until the base of the front sight post is flush with the front sight post housing (2). Then adjust the front sight post 11 clicks in the direction of UP.

(b) Adjust the rear sight windage drum (3) all the way left until it stops. Then turn the windage drum back (right) 17 clicks so the rear sight is approximately centered.

Image

(2) Battlesight Zeroing the M16A1. If necessary, the soldier should use the aperture marked "L" to battlesight zero the weapon (Figure 2-3). Tables 2-3 and 2-4 show how much one click of elevation or windage will move the strike of the round from a 25-meter zero all the way out to 500 meters.

You may also want to look at the Revised Improved Battlesight Zero.

I have used this method on both my A2's with excellent results.

Of course, this assumes you have A2 sights...

Thanks for the advice fellas, I don't have standard AR sights, I have magpul flip up ones. I haven't had the chance to get back to the range to try and dial her in yet but I will soon. I'm toying with the option of getting some better quality ones, but am planning on getting an optic soon. Called Bills, out of stock of front sight adjustment tools, they carry them, but they don't know when they will have more.... 15 bucks, I'm better off just ordering one from the link provided by another member. I guess I just felt intimidated, really have no idea what I'm doing with zeroing in rifles, but that's the best way to learn right? Once again I have an excuse! I got into guns a little more than a year ago, bought a pistol, then another, built a lower, ordered an upper, my family HATES guns (long/messed up story).

sighted in my flat top AR yesterday afternoon. I also have an aftermarket rear flip up sight and standard A2 front sight post.

Rear sight only has windage, and I have no idea how many MOA 1 click equals.

Its not a huge deal if you don't have RIBZ memorized, its just guess and check otherwise. I did some highly technical guess and check, and low and behold my AR got sighted in. Cost me a little more ammo I guess, but WFC, my intent was to go through some ammo anyway. Now I'm knocking bowling pins at 100 yards (I wish I could say that I was with every shot...)

p.s. the cartridge works on the front sight post, but it and needle nose pliers kind of suck to use. I've read that you can make your own front sight tool out of a 30 caliber rifle case, but filing the case neck down to form the 4 or 5 prongs needed to rotate the front sight post. FYI for you DIYer's.

You shouldn't need pliers or anything other than a 5.56 cartridge to adjust a front sight.

Push down the detent spring with the tip of the bullet and push the sight in the direction you want it to go.
