Only pistol i have used on big game (excluding hogs) is a 250 savage XP100. never white tail either, just some prairie goats years ago.

Pigs have always been with a .45 colt in a blackhawk. I usually carry a .45 colt trapper when hunting hogs, but sometimes have gone with the pistol when not really expecting to run in to them, ( fixing fences etc) down on the FiL's farm.

That .300 AR "pistol" sounds like a hoot!

I 'spected a lot more Redhawks! Image Wouldn't've give it (along w/GP100, 'course) its own listing, otherwise. Sounds like a few folks HAVE used 'em, though ... but went on to somethin' else? Image

Now I wished I woulda broke out .41 from the rest ... I don't imagine there's many .500's in there ... but it's really tough to say, now! In retrospect, probly woulda replaced Redhawk/GP100 w/.41 (any brand) ... although, that mighta otherwise took from the Blackhawks! :?

Woulda been nice to have 'nother 10 options to list! Image

I haven't taken a deer with my Freedom Arms model 83 in .475 Linebaugh, it is my list, but might take it hog hunting first.

Can shoot a .480 in a .475, but I don't shoot .44 specials in my .44 magnums either. ;)

I have a friend in Mankato that has a 7.5 Super Redhawk in .480 for sale. 8-)

that 300 fireball/whisper AR pistol is pretty freakin awesome. someday... someday... :?

i always carry a 686 (.357) with me in the woods pretty much no matter what i'm hunting. it's there more for the 2 legged idiot factor than taking down any 4 legged critters - although it will do just fine for both

I am a fan of the big S&W revolvers. I have taken deer with both the 500 and the 460. The 460 is now all I use but both worked equally well. I don't think the deer could tell the difference.

What kinda ranges have ya taken deer with them?

I been thinkin' of a .460 fer a few years ... I need a longer S&W .44 (at current, I only got a 3in) ... and so I was thinkin' harder about one ... but figured I'd probly get a .44 ... nice PC one ... ain't shippin' yet! :(

If you want a single action for deer get an older .45 colt blawkhawk. You can beat a .44 mag hands down.

Still using the 45 Colt. I traded my Vaquero in for the Blackhawk because my eyes like it better. Fits in the Mernickle rig, although tightly.

For 45 Colt the Hornady FTX/LeverRevolution is a nice round. I use that in the 45/70 as well.

I seen some comments on the 357. My response is would you use a 30/30? The 357 is more powerful. Since the 30/30 killed a whole mountain of deer, I don't think I would be worried about 357 in the Minnesota woods.

That's too bad! ... I liked that gun! ... shoulda kept my own .45, too! :hammer:

Ya get one of the XR3's? ... I really like that grip! Image

I don't sweat the board ninja's ... I came across a guy ... shootin' trap ... and we got to talkin' about this sorta thing ... and he says "I shot a deer with a .44 once ... I'll never do it again! ) ... musta gut-shot it!

Speakin' of which, I'm a bit surprised by the new .357 Ruger 77 ... .44 in a bolt-action wouldn't've been what I'd call "punishing". Ya, .357 is ok ... but if yer gonna go with a rifle, why not a .44? ... 'er even .460? No matter, I'd still run with a levergun, anyhow!

See the new 16in .357/.44 Marlins? Don't sound like they're shippin' yet. Basically a big-loop XLR '94 ... they make it in a 20in, I might hafta git one!

Got to remember what most forget, it is the Indian and not the arrow, that is if the arrow is up to the task, but usually the Indian isn't. 8-)

Seein' some of 'em shoot at the 3ft "bad-guy" target at 5yd, I gotta wonder if they'd have better luck hangin' from a tree with a knife in their teeth?!
