Going prone at Oakdale?

I RO’d the 200 this past sunday and a member asked to shoot sitting on the ground between the benches. I told him as long as he does it safely and behind the line, I was cool with it. I did watch him closely. The non-member I was there for was 2 benches away. It went fine. He was shooting 22lr with a scope hitting his gong he set up before I got there. Kinda neat really to hear that thing ring so clearly from 200yds away.

I was there a couple weeks ago ... at the 100yd ... some other guy asked to shoot standing up (never even occurred to me to ask, 'fore) ... RO said "ok" ... he shoots! ... then another RO (apparently one that knew a lot more 'bout maintaining a safe range) came along and told him "no".

Later on, I overheard the "no" RO tell the shooter he "was overruled, and it was ok". :roll:

The real problem was, 10 seconds later, another RO started spouting off 'bout WHY the other RO said "no". :hammer:

It's purdy simple ... muzzle downrange (muzzle-loader/cleaning/gun-rack, muzzle-skyward) ... no one downrange = hot ... gun cased or action open and hands off = safe!

It's probably something that should be addressed at a future meeting.

RO's contradicting one another and inconsistent application of policies just looks bad and pisses people (read: paying customers) off.

If you bring that up, tell them if they have 5-6 guys with 3-4 tokens each shooting trap, it's OK to put more than 50 clays in the machine. Nothing like shooting trap and having to stop mid-round EVERY round for them to stoke the machine. Last time I shot there a non-member got in an argument about it and walked off.

He was trying to explain to them that they could make more $ if it didn't take an hour to shoot a round of trap, they wouldn't hear it. I apologized to him (I had my member badge on, but was just shooting) and explained that since the RO's are basically forced labor they don't care how much money the club makes, they are just doing time and don't want to have to unload the machine at the end of the day...The old marine out there used to preach not overloading the trap machine at the end of the day...

Agreed, but at the same time an RO has to feel empowered to use common sense as well. One can not forsee every possible scinerio and have a policy for it. IMHO.

Like common sense gun-control! ... "you don't need 6 AR's to shoot a deer!"

Maybe spell out 4 'er 5 things fer 'em ... like makin' sure the muzzle stays pointed downrange, 'er straight up ... and actions are open and empty while it's "safe" ... if someone wants to try to shoot whilst standing on their head, more power to 'em!

I got bitched at one time fer settin' up an official IPSC target ... 'cause it was a "silhouette" ... and "disallowed in the bylaws" ... 'sept it weren't ... they misremembered a totally different worthless rule. I cut off the head ... makin' it practically a rectangle ... and even then, someone thought they needed to push it! :roll:

I went out to Oakdale yesterday again. Had a nice time, the 100 and 25 yard ranges were packed. I basically had the 200 myself most of the time i was there. RO's at the 200 were super cool.

Oakdale suffers from the same problems as many volunteer or weekend warrior type organizations "no consistency in message or management". Example: Yesterday I was told that i must fill out a waiver every time, but last week when I told the cashier I am not a member but shoot the weekly USPSA league he stated "Oh, nevermind. One waiver a year is all we need".

All in all OGC is a good group, i have no problem continuing to patronize there facility. They just need to get everyone on the same page.

Good thought but with over 1200 members all who participate in Range Duty 2x per year, it is unlikely to happen. I think though as long as you have a good group of folks that are friendly and want to make your experiance a good one, many of the minor issues can be ironed out.

As far as moving benches on the 200' range at Oakdale, well good luck.....they're CONCRETE and HEAVY! :lol:

You know, I'm not sure the BobCat can fit under the covered portion of the 200. In fact, I'd bet a can of soda from the vending machines at OGC that it won't...

For those who don't know me, a "can of soda" is the 2nd largest bet I ever make (with the largest being a 20oz bottle...) - that's how sure I am it won't fit... 8-)

I'm SURE the Bobcat can FIT under the covered portion. the condition of the covered portion and the bench afterwards is precisely what we're discussing here :-)

I'm not advocating the destruction of property but I think H&H's tongue in cheek comment is technically correct :-)

OK wise guy, I guess I should have been more clear... My bet assumes the cover on the 200 would remain intact...

Agreed.....
besides one does not need to move the benches on the 200 to shoot prone, it is done all the time..............
now climbing in the tubes at FLGC to shoot prone is a different story........... :twisted:
