Quality?
NightForce hands down for the money.

Guess you didn't read my OP. Looking for a sub $300 optic. Nothing sub $300 about a NightForce!

I was trying to state I will buy the best glass I can get for $300, not really concerned with reticle type, knobs, other bells and whistles etc...

After shooting a couple 3guns I have decided I would like to put some iron sights on this rifle.

What is the best way to go about doing it?

I am thinking about drilling and tapping some holes on the FF tube and adding some small pieces of rail to mount the sights on.

Anyone done this before? How does it work?

Off the top of my head, ya'd wanna make sure they're as much in alignment, with the tube, as can possibly be! :?

... ya'd at least need somethin' very square (preferably somethin' used specifically to verify it ... like a t-square) ... and ideally somehow clamp it to the tube, whilst ya mark yer holes. Image

Might be worth it to find someone who's already got a good set-up, 'n pay them to do it?

On that rifle you should be able to reinstall the original FSB that was indexed to that barrel, you'll need to remove the flash hider (should be flat on 2 sides so you can use a crescent or adjustable wrench, I suggest putting some electrical tape on the flash hider to avoid marring) and then the 2 allen set screws holding the current gas block in place (locktited, a heat gun may be necessary). Throw a little grease on the barrel in front of the gas block you are removing to avoid marring and slide it off, slide the original FSB in place and then tap in the pins, reinstall the flash hider... back in business!

I do not think adding a front sight or rail to that particular forend for optics is a great option, there's no permanent "lock" on the barrel nut to which it's threaded and it's possible it will move over time and wreck your zero. Either buy one of the higher end free float tubes that includes screws to "lock" the tube to the barrel nut ($$$) or install the original FSB (free).
