An employee happened to round the endcap so I asked him. He says, "oh, it's locked up in the cabinet under the counter." I said, "that's odd, seems everything else is out here on the shelf." He laughs and says something like "don't ask me why".

As he ran through the boxes they had down there, nothing at the price point I thought was worth the purchase, I saw that all they had locked up was 9mm.

Long story so I can ask my question... what's the deal with locking up only the 9mm caliber? I had to be staring at that damn shelf for a good 5 minutes.

Every time I've gone there they had 9mm, .40, and .45 locked up. It's also taken a very long time to get someone to help with the ammo when I've been there.

Yep just went and bought some .40 and it was under the counter. On a side note I am going to go hit my hand a few times with a hammer for buying factory ammo.

i guess handgun ammo being locked up is something that i will never understand. if someone REALLY wanted to go on a shooting rampage, and they were atleast somewhat intelligent at one point in thier lives, they would grab an AR15 platform, fill a couple dozen 30 rounders with 556/223, and find a tactically advantageous place to camp out.

before you ask, yes, i have thought about this. i guess it's one of the things that the Marines taught me that i can't seem to shake. i also figure every possible exit strategy when i enter a building. at the VA Service Office in Anoka, i concluded that if there was need to escape, i'd go through the window and fall 8-9 feet to the ground. that was on Tuesday, so it's fresh in my memory bank

I figured the didn't sell it. That is screwed up. You know if you started reloading you wouldn't have to worry about it.

Yeah yeah, I'll be in investigating that investment this winter.

Slightly off topic...I went to check out the brand new Dick's Sporting goods that moved into the space of the former Sportsman Warehouse (Dang, I miss them) up here in Coon Rapids and they had ALL rifle and pistol ammo locked up behind the counter! Everything except shotgun shells! Their hunting/shooting department was a joke. Not much selection...the firearms appeared to be on the cheaper end of the spectrum...NO ARs or AKs that I could see and NO handguns. I won't be going back there anytime soon.

That's been that way at every Dick's I've been to. Back when it was Galyan's they sold handguns and had decent prices on stuff.

I found something new at the Wal-Mart in Apple Valley last night. 100rd value packs of Federal 9mm 115gr. for 19.98. I asked the guy working the counter and he told me they started coming in a couple weeks ago.

Every Walmart I've ever been to has handgun and rifle ammo locked up, though I've never run into it being hidden under a counter. I never quite understood why the exception for shotgun shells. Apparently, you can't kill or injure anyone with a shotgun.

Probably logistics. Shotgun shells come in bigger boxes and cases...not enough space to create locked storage?

I always thought it was locked up due to theft reasons. Harder to pocket a big box of shotgun shells than a small box of 9mm.

When I went to the check out counter with all my shotgun shells, the lady asked me.

Lady - "so what are these for?"
Me - "To shoot clay targets with"
Lady - "Oh, Ok What's your birthday?"
Me - I told her
Lady - "So if these are for targets, why do they ask your birthday?"
Me - "Because they are shotgun shells... ammunition."
Lady - "So they could hurt someone if they got shot with them?
Me - "Ummmm yes, the target shells are just are lethal as the... regular? ones?
Lady - "Oh, I did not know that."

SOOOOO according to the lady who allowed me to buy this mass amount of shells thought that since they are for "clay targets", meant that they weren't lethal.

I buy my shoes at Dick's.
1. Go to the customer service counter and ask for a pack of coupons for coaches. Soccer, baseball, whatever is in season.
2. Fill out a name and address on their paperwork, Any old name and address works.
3. get a big envelope with coupons to give to kids on the team.
4. The 2 page of coupons designated for the coaches have a nice $10 off $25 purchase coupon. can no longer be used for ammunition.
5. ???
6. Profit!

When we lived in Colorado I'd make weekly trips to Walmart to buy a box or two of their winchester white box 9mm. It wasn't locked up, but displayed along with all the other ammo.

Just ONE of the reasons I will not voluntarily set foot in a Walmart. Cripes, I'll gladly pay the extra $1 or $1.50 for ammo at Cabela's or buy on line first before I give Wallyworld any of my cash! Support the stores that support US! Walmart is there to crush the competition any way they can.
