Gun inventory spreadsheet...

Postby justinvan on Sat Nov 26, 2011 7:26 pm

Does somebody have the skills needed to create a spreadsheet that would have coloums for make, model, ser#,app value, cal/gauge,accessories, etc? I am getting to the point with my collection that if something were to happen to it I am not sure I could remember all the details! I was thinking that a spreadsheet would be nice so you could easily list all the guns with there info. May also be handy for getting info to insurance co. when putting together a policy. Just a thought from a computer illiterate gun lover.

http://www.nmcollectorsoftware.com/

more convincing for the insurance companies if you have pictures of condition, serial numbers and scans of BOS. For $20 it might be worth it. I haven't tried this one......... I used GUNSAFE software for a bit, but it's no longer available. Now i just upload pictures and documentation to a private section of my Flickr account for insruance purposes.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

If ya don't trust Google to keep yer stuff safe, after every update, maybe save it as .xls on a USB jump-drive? :ugeek:

I made my own in FIlemaker a few years ago. Pictures can be attached to each record in the database, and there are a lot more fields than just the basic ones you mentioned. If you anyone here uses Filemaker I'd be happy to send it to you. It's an actual database program, not a spreadsheet like Excel.

Axcrypt is another option if you don't trust google. You will loose the functionality of being able to open/edit it in browser but your file will be more secure.

FWIW, I was referring to the possibility that, without otherwise saving it from google's servers, to yer own hard-drive 'er such, that they might lose the data.

As to whether someone might wish to hack google's servers to see how many Glocks ya own ... well, good luck! ;)

I keep a simple google spreadsheet of my inventory.

all viable options. But what is the OP comfortable getting into.

Google docs is a good choice for a cloud storage if he can get into it and is knowledgeable to get there.

For $20 the collector software would really be worth it. Especially if he just tosses the thumb drive into a firebox. I'd want better back up to it though with something stored off-site though.

Best record system I have found for my insurance company is pictures of it in my house and / or video taping the house as a walk through. Show them the serial number on those items with it, all they have cared about. It's all insured for replacement value not purchase value anyway.

Try this one. The value/cost column automatically adds up the values.

Well ... that's why I gave him a link. He managed to "get here". If he can't "get there", I'd say he's got bigger trouble. :?

I'd say google's servers are purdy "off-site". 8-)

Nice .xls, BTW! ;)

thanks.

His request got me thinking about actually making something similar to the nmcollector software. It'd be rather easy to do with vba and excel. But with the suggestion of nmcollector, I'd suggest that route first. Seems very worthwhile for the power of what it will do and data/images it collects.

Thanks Farmer, been filling it out for a while now... made a minor adjustment and of to the races. Now I think I will put the files on a memory stick and pics on a SD card in my safe deposit box or a seperate fire safe. Just want to have some record in case something happens. It may not be perfect by some peoples standards but its a hell of a lot better than what I had.

justin,
if you can fill the blocks in under it, you could have done what I did.

Glad it's serving your needs.
