The journey of Bubba... The Bastardization of an M44

Meet Bubba.

DSC05098.jpg

Bubba is a 1953 hungarian M44 with some issues. This is the condition I purchased this in, here on the board. I read about people "sporterizing" (read: butchering) these rifle, and figured that since this one was already tortured, that it would be a fun project.

Step one... remove front sight assembly.

IMAG0299.jpg

This is more difficult than it appears. There are two pins, and some sort of demonic bonding agent and about 4 gallons of packed in cosmoline holding it in place. Needless to say, after a few beers, a lot of **** talking, and seemingly endless opunding with a 16oz claw hammer, it came free.

Next was to remove the rear sight. This wasn't necessary, but since we were beating on a rifle, I figured... why stop now?

IMAG0300.jpg

One pin, and it slid right out.

After this, it was time for a well deserved break.

The next day I went to the Sportsman's Guide and picked up a kit to further butcher this poor rifle.

Here is the sequence of marking, drilling and tapping for the scope mount.

This all went pretty well with the help of Shipyard, his basement and his beer. The steel in the receiver of this rifle was surprisingly soft, but after getting the mount attached I was amazed at how stable it is. No movement at all.

Here is with the scope mounted.

IMAG0320.jpg

All in all it looks OK, and works a lot beter than expected!

Next project is the bolt handle. IThe standard straight handle of the M44 has to be replaced with a bent handle that will clear the scope mount. Shipyard has a mill that he wants to play with, so I sent it with him. Updates when I get it back.

i duno if i can get the bolt handle milled and attached today - i'll be playing with power tools (really, REALLY big power tools :D ) and don't have a beer in my hand. it ain't like it's my basement with a drill press

i'll see if i can suffer through it.

You should see it in person when they work together - scratch that - no one should have to see that in person!

the bubba bolt handle:

first - trusty hacksaw. oh yeah, hacksaw.

IMG_2307.JPG

second, fixture up in the mill. use gauge pins to center as good as you're going to get and lock 'er down.

mill the rough cut flat. measure the inside of the bolt handle cavity and mill it down to the same diameter, about 0.005" at a pass. it's REALLY soft "stainless" - man, i love cold war "steel" :D

IMG_2311.JPG

once it's at the right diameter, carefully cut flat the chamfer around the post. it's a radius up into the bolt handle and you're going to need to get rid of it for the new handle to fit flush against the bolt. take some time - after all, you're on the clock :?

IMG_2314.JPG

once the new handle fits down nice and flat, get it nice and straight and center up for drillin and tappin the screw hole. i used a gauge pin the same dia as the clearance hole to center up where i wanted the handle to lie. are there better ways? yeah - a ton. it's a bubba job. i'm goin easy today :P

IMG_2316.JPG

centered up, clearance hole drilled down about 0.300". use the mill to power tap starter threads with a bottom tap. finish the hole off by hand. i'm lazy today and i sure as hell don't feel like bustin a tap in dat ass (see what i did there???)

IMG_2318.JPG

since the "post" of the old handle is cut down good to a really good mate to the handle, the one screw design is actually REALLY solid. i was completely prepared to put antoher screw in about 0.600 center to center with the one that's allready cut to be there but i really didn't think it would be needed. the inside mating surfaces are allready nice and roughed up so spreaddin up a later of JB weld/JB kwik behind it and screwing it down should be 100% sufficient if the single screw starts to loosen up with/without some threadlock.

IMG_2320.JPG

all in all, took me about 45 minutes and i was jerkin the clock on the big fun time machines. had a good day.

and so - since i'm a big fancy engineer man, at my going rate of $800 an hour outside consulting services rate, Strad owes me about six bills. luckly, at the friend rate i accept a glass of good whiskey as paid in full for services rendered.

i'll bring the glass....

Coming along nicely... thanks for all the photos! Any plans to refinish the metal or further work the stock or are you pretty much wrapped on the project now?

Yeah, you kind of kick ass. The whiskey tonight was the first in a long line of tumblers for you.

After getting the bolt back I had to inlet the stock a bit due to the design of the bolt handle to get the action to close. here is a pic. (Sorry for the horse **** pics here.... I will get the "real" camera out when this project is all done.....)

IMAG0322.jpg

Now to make the muzzle brake and reshape the forend a bit, and we're ready for the range!

What am I talking about... I will get it to the range this weekend, brake or not.

This is Bubba. He will not be getting a nickle plate, or hot blue job..... After fashioning a muzzle brake, I'm planning on scrubbing this down a bit and spraying with flat black krylon high-temp grill paint. The stock will get reshaped at a minimum. If this turns out to be a shooter, I will buy new furniture for it from rifle-stocks.com. If not, I will make large fireballs and have a sub $100 range toy that will turn a lot of heads, and get even more shaking at me. :D

Hopefully you get the brake done by Sunday. I'd love to see how it shoots with one, compared to the standard M44 I'll be bringing.
