Your kid is shooting a handgun for the first time? Spend time teaching safety, put the damn camera down, stand behind him and be in control of the situation.

And if you ARE dumb enough to let your kid handle a firearm for the first time unsupervised, and almost get shot as a result, please don't post it on youtube. It's not funny. Nobody is going to get a "kick" out of this. It's nothing to brag about. It's just one more arrow inthe quiver of the antis. :roll:

Beside all the other obvious problems here. Dad is letting the kid listen to his I-pod(or whatever) instead of instruction (not that there was any), not to mention the lack of any proper hearing or eye protection. This is so full of fail, that it's beyond words. Nice work dad...... who would actualy post this on youtube.

At the hunting cabin we let the kids shoot airguns (and sometimes .22 depending on age). I stand at 8 oclock from them, literally about 2 inches away (so I can show a proper grip, help operate safeties, and grab them when the mess up). I also tell them every time specifically before shooting: "You are going to want to turn around to talk to someone, and you will end up pointing the gun that way, don't do that".

They end up (almost, since i'm there) doing it at least once EVERY TIME.

You can not trust those little buggers to remember everything, especially after they feel the thrill, and ESPECIALLY the first (or even 10th) time they shoot. They have to have copious repetition until it becomes ingrained and automatic like catching yourself when you stumble.

I see that you put quotes around that phrase. If that is what you're saying, you're basically telling them to do it.

Try telling them exactly what you want them to do, not what you don't want them to do. It's a subtle psychological thing.

I understand what u are saying, and i do also tell them to always keep the muzzle pointed downrange, etc., but when they turn u can see that their brain turned off, with the only signal being "Holy ****! That was awesome!"

Typical kid thing.

When my daughter went out on her first drive in a car after getting her driver's license, her friend helpfully said "Hey, there's a bee in the back seat!" Naturally my daughter turned to look at the problem ... and naturally turned the steering wheel along with her head. She went off the road an "only" hit a road sign (for which MNDOT billed us).

Kids. Need a lot of training. Hopefully most will survive.
