I'm thinking that Bills is your best bet, like someone else said rent whatever you like take notes, buy if you like. Then grab a burger next door.

In the interest of upping my post count (didn't want to be left out), I wanted to post that I updated my earlier post with some of the details about why I think the handgun rental place in SE MN is out of business.

Did we ever find another place to go, or is Bill's the only option?

I happen to think it's a good option, even if you have to drive a couple of hours to get there, for the simple fact that they have so MANY guns to choose from. It's really cool that we have a range to go, where you can pick up a .22 or .44 Magnum, revolver or auto, and shoot them all. A smaller range might have only a few guns to choose from (which was the case at the aforementioned establishment).

http://www.inrangellc.com/ in Monticello has 20+ hand guns that they rent out, and maybe 10 or so rifles. Family owned and run, it is a different experience and they take reservations at 763 295-4072. Full disclosure we are independent NRA trainers who offer monthly PTC classes and frequent women on basic pistol classes at Inrange where we are their official range trainers.

Ahlmans has an annual out-door show where you can try a number of firearms if you pay for the ammunition. There are also other events where manufactures are onsite and will allow you to shoot their firearm. Bills recently had this sort of show but it was all indoors.

IIRC, Bill's hosts two such shows a year - both at the Robbinsdale location. One in the spring and one in the fall.
