AR armorer/gunsmith?

Postby sprigfan on Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:25 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the area (Bloomington) and I'm looking for an armorer or gunsmith who will simply swap out the upper receiver on my AR15. I have emailed a few gunsmiths and both said they don't do ARs. Does anyone know a good place to get this done for cheap?

I can't do it myself because not only do I lack the tools, but I live in an apartment and don't have a place for a vice.

Thanks!

By swapping the upper reciever are you talking about the complete barreled upper? If that's the case an un-trained monkey could do it. If your trying to take all the parts off a current upper and put them on a different upper reciever, try Element Arms in Becker. Are you trying to go from an A2 to a flat-top A3 style, should probably try to expain what your goal is a bit better.

Haha no I'm not wanting to just swap the upper half - just the receiver itself. I have a left-handed stag that I want converted to right handed. So I will be keeping the barrel that is on there now.

Be warned that in addition to needing a new upper forging, you are going to need a new bolt head. And I'm not sure if the small parts on the ejector port cover are interchangeable or not.

But the bolt head is a definite must, or your gun will try to pitch the brass into the wall of the upper, instead of out the port.

Thanks, Norsesmithy. I know I will need an entirely new BCG.

The guys at Element Arms in Becker could probably get you fixed up, while you shop. Give them a call, it's worth the drive.

Atomic Tactical is right in Bloomington, I am not sure he is a gunsmith but an Ar assembler I know fits. He is on Lyndale Ave directly south of Divannis.

sprgfan,

Guarenteed perfect fit on your gun - I will even do it fror you.

My son is left handed - so somewhat looking for a LH Stag Complete Upper for him.

This could be a good trade for both of us.

Standard pins - fits all my Bushmasters lowers just fine.

Try it - if you don't like it, let me know.

About six or so years ago I had a barrel replaced by a guy (can't remember his name) who ran a shop out of his house called Territorial Arms. He was a good guy and was very knowledgeable. At the time he told me he was going to get out of the gunsmithing business soon so I don't know if he is still smithing. I did find a number for Territorial Gunsmiths so I don't know if it's him or not, but it would be worth a call.

Thanks for the replies everyone. As 45Badger pointed out, I sold it (actually the entire upper half). This past weekend I ordered a new right handed upper from Palmetto State Armory.
