Plastic Jacket Bullets?

Postby plink on Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:35 pm

I saw them at Cabela's yesterday. I already forgot the brand. Anyone tried them? Are they supposed to be cheaper to produce or have other kind of advantage? I suppose you can get creative with shotgun projectiles, so why not regular bullets? They were in 9mm if it matters.

Strongly suspect these are not plastic, but Nylon coated. Like the old Federal NYCLAD. Originally developed for indoor shooting ranges to reduce lead particles and to make a cheaper round (no copper jacket).

Actually, I think you're right. They weren't priced bad, but nothing special.

Plastic Jacket Bullets?

I saw them the other day. I believe they're Herters brand, nylon jacket. Don't remember the price, but I know they were price cheaper than the Herters FMJ

I strongly suspect Nylon is Plastic.

So like I was saying... " the old Federal NYCLAD. Originally developed for indoor shooting ranges to reduce lead particles and to make a cheaper round (no copper jacket)." The hollow point NYCLAD expanded very well, it was dead soft lead with a nylon coating, and had a reputation for being good defensive ammo. = Reference: "Handgun Stopping Power" by Evan Marshall & Edwin Sanow.

A super soft bullet at short range would probably smoosh nicely on impact with a soft target.

The plastic or epoxy based coatings mainly reduce fowling and lead particles like 870TC said... Other than that, the coating doesn't offer anything of notability versus a plain lead bullet. I do disagree with 870TC in regard to nyclad ammunition being a good defensive round. A bullet that doesn't have a good jacket can easily fragment and loose mass which will prevent it from achieving adequate penetration and damage. From a defensive standpoint a nyclad HP bullet is the same as a lead HP bullet. A copper jacketed HP bullet should retain it's mass better than a plain lead bullet in comparison, and achieve higher FPS without breaking apart.

What would happen if they took a pure lead bullet and encased it in plastic?
Would the plastic keep the pure lead from fouling the barrel?
Would the pure lead deform/expand easier then a hard lead bullet?
Would the pure lead being more maleable be more apt to stay together on impact then hard lead?

1-I believe that's what these are.
2-Sounds like the plastic reducing fouling is one of the bonuses.
3-Deforming sounds like a wash since the plastic isn't any harder than the lead.
4-Sounds like the softer lead is more prone to being ripped apart during the whole process.
