need some AK help

Postby Shipyard on Tue Nov 22, 2011 7:34 pm

recently picked up an Ak pistol. got a problem with it jamming though. does it constantly. seems that the rounds are not being "lifted" enough (?) and they're slamming straight in to the barrel extension (i think that's what it's called). anyways, here are some pics of the issue:

usually slamms the bullet back in to tha case and ruins the cartridge. dents up the ball ammo in either case.

apparently my google fu is a little weak, all i found was some dudes who said to hog off a feed ramp with a dremmel

anyone run into this? i'm none too familiar with the commie guns.

First I'd try a few different mags, including a polymer one if you can. Also check to make sure bolt guide rails are even and the welds are intact. The carrier should move easily with no binding, and bad rails will push it off to one side or downwards, causing a FTF.

I have problems sometimes with HP's on my AKM's. but not on FMJ's.
The last one I built had a feed ramp ground into the barrel. No problems with HP's on it now.

Here's a pic:

Looks like your having the same problem but with FMJ's? Possible that the mag isn't going up all the way...? maybe hitting on the lower rails if they were installed too low. I'd think you'd know that though if the bolt carrier slides good and ins't too low. Do you have another you can compare it to?

You need a "bullet guide". Use a piece sectioned off a steel pipe and either have it welded in or countersunk screwed into the front trunnion.

I don't think a bullet guide or feed ramp should be needed. That is something you would do to a Saiga because the mag well is set back from the chamber. Millions and millions of AKs work just fine without them.

you know, that's just the thing. this is my first Ak and i thought it was supposed to be indestructible and be able to shoot even full of sandy water :? :? :?

and i can't even get the dam thing to cycle out of the box on a warm range with good ammo!!! :x

Something ain't right and my first guess would be the mag. I have a dozen different ones here if you want to try them

yep, try a couple different mags. even the standard surplus ones can sometimes be out-of-spec depending how beat up they are.

though, depending on the manufacturer of the AK, if could also be that the mag catch isn't properly placed. noticed that with some of the romanian aks.

Notice how low the feed lip is compared to the cutout in the bolt? Looks like the magazine should be a 1/8" higher or so. I'd recheck the mag catch to see if it's the correct height, if after adjusting it it still doesn't feed I'd add the M4 style feedramp cuts.

Looks like it is missing a bullet guide, looks a lot like a saiga from what i can see, looks like it may even have the hole already drilled for the guide. You can get those from carolina shooting supply, tromex saiga might have one or be able to get one as well. Who makes this ak? Any pics of the inside without ammo in it? It was nice to meet you also (walgreens lot).
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

It rocked my cousin's world when he picked up an AK that as it turns out - is NOT indestructable!

Hmmm... I will say something doesn't look quite right in your pics... Could be the bullet guide thing, as mentioned.
I'll see if I can't take a look at mine tonight. It's been awhile.
