Shooting at Cook County courthouse

PROSECUTOR SHOT

This is a very small community," County Commissioner Janice Hall said. "There's a sign on the door that says no firearms allowed beyond this point."

This was my biggest fear when I did our courthouse security.

I don't think people should be disarmed when they enter a court house. If they want to put up metal detectors to verify who's armed and make sure they're legal to be armed so be it... Why should someone give up a right to self defense when entering a court room? It's obvious that even the best of security can't guarantee your safety.

The bailiffs need to be armed, trained, watching the defendant, and quicker on the draw.

This.

We often would bring additional armed staff in for the reading of the verdict in higher profile trials like this.

I considered shooting a guy once who grabbed for something shiny and metallic inside his coat during the verdict reading for his son's killer. It ended up being a metal picture frame with his son's picture in it. :-|

One of the many reasons that I have much respect, and one of the reasons I decided to pursue a different line of work.

I'm pretty sure the mods surreptitiously moved it from this thread to that one. They're trying to mess with my mind! The jerkfaces!

I did not catch this before, or maybe it did not have as much meaning to me. I got a summons for jury duty last week. I don't mind the duty part I do mind the not armed part. They sent along a bus pass for a free ride to down town. There is no way in hell I am riding a city bus unarmed. I can not even have a friggen nail clipper with me.

IIRC, plblark had a similar situation (albeit in Ramsey county). He may be able to provide you with some recommendations. The only other advice I can offer is to contact the sheriff's department/court, and find out if they have a secure area where you can store your weapon while on jury duty.
