I just sent everything in Monday for a field grade!
Looks like the field grades went up though, so maybe I'll get a phone call and they'll let me move up to a service grade :hmm:

How does one qualify for the CMP program?

As far as I can tell, you have to be a member of an authorized club (and it sounds like you can pay 1year dues online), and then have to show that you can handle firing a gun. That proof could be any certified course that includes live fire training.

Is that correct?

I had the DNR firearm safety course, which included live fire training, when I was 12. Does that count?

Would a CC course count, too?

The way I understand it is you have to be a member of a CMP affiliated club or to have qualified with an M1 through a CMP club.

http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/eligibility.htm

Here you go -- fill out the forms, join the Garand Collector's Association (http://www.thegca.org/ -- $25/year), and provide "evidence of Marksmanship training" (a Carry Permit will suffice). Fill out the forms as indicated (follow the checklist) -- get your signature notarized (Kinkos or UPS Stores do this for $1), and mail in your order.

Simple, easy, and the best deal on an M1 and ammo you're ever going to find commercially!

Pat

P.S. You don't have to go to a CMP shoot or range day to become eligible anymore so long as you have a carry permit or C&R license...but if you do belong to a club, or attend a CMP shoot, that works for Marksmanship Training as well.

Here's a list of CMP affiliated clubs in MN.

Pat is right, the marksmanship requirement was loosened up a few years ago. One only needs a MN Firearms Safety certificate or carry permit to qualify.

I should point out that the CMP shoots are nice for learning the M1...its not a steep curve, but there are definitely some things to know about!

How is it watered down? Just because you don't have to have a password and secret handshake to buy one anymore?

Been to their website lately? Their point (and congressional mandate) is to deliver military surplus .30 and .22 caliber arms and ammo into the hands of civilians for the purpose of marksmanship training. They sponsor the CMP Games Eastern and Western -- youth programs, etc...

I don't ever recall a secret password.
You answered your own question. The original intention of the CMP used to be that the weapons be used for marksmanship training. Now that there are no requirements for that, 90% of the M1's sold get picked up by collectors and people who just think it would be cool to own one. Maybe being the secretary of a club that still holds M1 qualifications makes me biased. How many M1's being bought today are actually being used for marksmanship Training.

I'm old enough to remember when the CMP was run by the DCM (Dept of Civilian Marksmanship). I tend to agree with Shooter115, while I'm glad more people are getting M1's it saddens me that these same people aren't showing up for formal/informal marksmanship training.
