Recommend a deer riffle.

Im not a hunter but apparently my 21 year old daughter is. Her BF got her into it but she is not fond of my 30-30 lever gun. Says its too heavy. I would like to find something before next season so no hurry.

Also looking to possibly sell said 30-30 made by Western auto supply. Value ?

She is a smaller med sized girl, not much exp with guns of any kind unless she has been shooting with him. Sounds like she did well with it (30-30) when they sighted it in. I would say she is into it for the long run because even without the BF her brother, cousins, and grandpa are deep into it. LOL

Had someone recommend a .270

.270 is a fine choice.

I'm not a 270WIn fan. Good but not for me.

Important consideration for her is light weight, shorter action, shorter barrel, to fit her better.
A 270WIN is long action, 22" barrel, typically a larger physically sized gun.

Go to Gander to try guns on for size, not for caliber! DO NOT BUY! She needs to learn what's available for her, without pressure of a sales person.

Remington ADL, youth model, synthetic stock in .243 or 7mm-08. Both will kill any deer she ever imagines shooting without the recoil of a long action cartridge (like a .270, 30-06. etc). Slap a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 on it and your set for life. My boys both started with that gun and still and still prefer it to nicer guns I have for them.

My daughter, 20, 5'10", shoots a Remington ADL Youth Synthetic stocked 308Win. Been using it since age 14. Taken 4 deer with it, easily.

I'd also nod toward the .243 and 7mm-08 vs the .270... The .270 is a great and versatile cartridge but while milder than a 30-06 I think it kicks harder than the .308 and it's even lighter kicking cousins (.243/7mm-08).

If you're shopping new guns I'd put a Marlin XS7 up against pretty much any out of the box rifle out there under $350 (they can be had for as little as $300 if you shop sales) - pillar bedded stock, adjustable trigger (with safety insert), soft recoil pad, well balanced, bolt can be cycled with the safety on to unload (blind box like the 700 ADL) and includes a scope base - just add rings/optics (Redfield Revolution, Nikon Buckmaster, Leo VX2, etc..). The Marlin 336y "Spikehorn" youth model 30/30 is less than $400 and chops 4" off the barrel and 1" off the stock of a typical full size lever-gun and may be a better fit for her in 30/30.

What kind of terrain is she hunting?

* I have a Marlin XL7 in .270 and a 336y in 30-30 if you end up meeting with OldmanFCSA/Doug to try some rifles I'd be glad to wander that way and add them to the evaluation group. Curious to try a couple myself since I've got 3 young hunters in the making (2 daughters and a son) who will be going through the same process in another 8-10 years.

I've got a Savage Model 10 in .243 with both youth stock and a full size stock. Willing to let her try it out if she wants to. If she's liking deer hunting, maybe she'd like coyote hunting the rest of winter. In that case, the .243 would be a great choice for her.

What kind of area is she hunting? more wooded? or open ground?

I would get her a Tikka T3 lite. Lightweight, reliable, and dead accurate. Something in the 30-06 or 270 flavor for tagging white tails.

Throw some 3-9x glass on it, a nice sling, limb saver butt stock pad, and she's set.

7-08 is a good choice, but I think most people over glass and I would lean towards a good 2X-7X scope instead.

My wife found a Remington 700 Mountain in .243 on clearance at Gander several years ago.

Deadly, light, accurate, and good for HER. 1" groups at 100 yards. Plus, I've never had to track deer she's shot.
