Shipping a handgun?

Postby bennybangbang on Wed Jan 11, 2012 9:15 am

Can I mail or ship a handgun legally? If so, how do I do so? UPS Store turned me away saying that I would have to go to the warehouse, however the UPS website states that I must be a FFL to ship. I work downtown and was hoping to get this thing off to its new owner today but I can't find anywhere to do so, so I may have to wait till I am off work. That means it will be pushed back another day because I will miss shipping cut off. What a pain in the arss!!

Anyone have any bedazzling ideas?

Good info above for UPS.

More importantly, if you are shipping out of state it must be to a FFL or manufacturer. You can't do an interstate transfer without an FFL.

Last time I had to ship one, I found the cheapest possible way (well legal way anyways) was for my FFL to charge me $10 for "handling" and shipped via USPS. Similar shipment a while back cost me $65 via UPS. Any further shipments will go thru my FFL. 100 times easier.

That's been my experience, too. Last one I did was $10 at Gunstop. It just had to be shipped to another FFL.

I've been turned away from the UPS store for wanting to ship a rifle barrel. Just the barrel. The guy at the counter told me they don't ship anything to do with firearms and said I need to take it to the UPS hub or take it to a gunstore to ship. I was tempted to go back later and declare it a steel tube but decided I didn't want to deal with them at all.

I use the USPS most often as the pricing is better, and from what I've heard it is the safest way to ship firearms. Plus I live in Lindstrom and the P.O. is only about 2 miles away. I do give the customer the choice of FedEx as well, but it is more costly. I never use UPS because the fees are too steep to make it worthwhile.

That will work, but if there is an insurance claim, the claim will be denied if the shipped item is determined to be a firearm.

That would be my concern, too. In my case where I was told "no gun parts" that could have been in violation of any contract I would have done with the UPS store had I declared steel tube or machine parts.
Ironically, I do ship machine parts at work and have had to do lost package claims.
4. UPS Reviews Documents
It is essential that the shipper supplies UPS with documentation that shows the lesser of the actual purchase cost or replacement cost, up to the declared value, as requested in the Damage/Loss Notification claim letter. Requested documentation may include original invoices, purchase orders, proof of shipment, or other information required by UPS.

UPS will:

Determine what, if any, value was declared for the contents of the package
Verify that the product falls within the guidelines of the UPS terms or contract with the shipper

UPS mailing address and fax number information are provided in the Damage/Loss Notification claim letter. Instructions are also provided on how to submit your documentation to UPS online
