Rescue Tool

Postby Defog on Fri Jan 20, 2012 8:40 pm

I'm interested in hearing about rescue tools. Seat belt cutter, something to break a window, possibly even cut a windshield.

I saw an accident aftermath on the north end of Spaghetti Junction in Saint Paul last night on my way home. It got me thinking about how I would get out. Especially if my car was underwater.

What do you suggest? I don't mind paying for quality, and being frugal is good too. I'm mostly wanting to know what to look for. It would be good to hear from EMTs and LEOs on this. All comments welcome.

Thanks for your time.

I've got one Wifey got me for Christmas many years ago.

Trick is having it WHEN YOU NEED IT !!!

Velcro it to center console so driver or passengers can all reach it as necessary.

Center-punch works, until you need to clean shatterred glass away so you can get out.

Passenger windows are easiest to break if you hit them in the CORNERS of the window frame. They will shatter.

The tip from a spark plug works wonders on them.

Haven't seen a purpose-built car rescue tool I liked. I prefer a pocket folder with a glass breaker.

My ZT350 knife has a glass breaker on it and can easily cut a seatbelt.

My Smith & Wesson M&P knife had a glass breaker too, but it's not the quality of the ZT.

I am pretty sure my HSEE RAT-5 would have no problem with glass, but I don't carry that on my person (all the time).

I carry a device very similar to this in my personal, as well as company vehicles.
Fortunately I have never had to use it so I don't know how well it might work.
If someone knows of it's weakness, or deficiency, I'd like to hear from you.
These are not too expensive; less that $10.

This is an excellent design. When I'm working I just have a knife that has a seatbelt cutter incorporated in my pocket. When I'm not working, see above.

I have one of these in my vehicle as well. I've never had to use it but I think it will do the job. Don't remember where I got it, I think someone gave it to me.

Thank you. I appreciate the various ideas. So many times, by asking others, I am made aware of other options that I would never have thought of.

I like MNGT for such knowledge. Okay, I have to admit I love all the good fun too! Can't wait to meet more of you.

The spring loaded deal on mine broke, my girlfriends and her moms are still working just fine three years later.
I love it when a plan comes together!
