Reloading 10mm... what's yuour fancy?

Postby Shipyard on Sat Jan 21, 2012 1:59 pm

i have been drooling over 10mm guns for a long, long time now, aside from 44 mag it really is my favorite cartridge. the cost and availability of ammo has always been the big block into picking up a 10 mil, but after a few years of reloading 45's and 9mm without issue i think it may be time to scratch a hand cannon itch...

what are you putting together your 10 mm with? what's your favorite powder/projectile? any tips?

word.

For my cannon loads, I use Accurate Arms #9 powder with either a 180gr or a 165gr bullet.

I like Nosler bullets, 150g or 185g. Power Pistol is good. Easy to reload. I shoot a 610-3 and 310NG with moon clips. No issues in autos either. I push all the auto brass thru a GRX carbide resizer die.

If you want the max loads, Blue Dot is the powder for the 10mm. 10.0 grains of Blue Dot, which is THE ABSOLUTE MAX LOAD with a Hornady 200 grain XTP will give you the original Norma factory spec of 200 grains at 1200 FPS out of a 5" barrel.

Oh, and if you don't want to spend major coin and dent up your malt liquor budget, you might consider the EAA Stock in 10mm. Very strong gun, and sells for about $525 instead of $1025 or more like a Dan Wesson, Colt Delta Elite, or other 1911 10mm.

Don't forget the Glock 20!!! :D

Say, I wonder what the max load (200gr XTP under 10.0gr of Blue Dot) would do out of a 16" carbine barrel? It could make an acceptable whitetail cartridge for those places like Indiana with those weird case length restrictions.

I have a DW CBOB in 10MM and a Witness Elite Match in 10MM. They both shoot very well with a slight accuracy edge to the Witness.

For target practice I load 170gr LSWC or Zero Brand 180gr JHP with AA #7 or Silhouette.
For high power Hunting/SD loads I use 180gr XTP powered by Longshot. I've loaded a lot of Blue Dot and it is also an excellent choice, but I switched over to Longshot for the reduced muzzle flash and it meters much better than BD.

thanks a lot for the tips guys - i'll see if i can sneak something fun by the wifey here in the near future :D

the Witness is a damn solid gun, i'm just not a huge SA/DA guy. i'm either going to have to go balls out for a 1911 platform (Delta Elete's are nice :D ) or stick with my gutter taste and my facination for the plastic fantastics and bring home a glock 20.

either way, hand cannons are fun stuffs :P

Maybe a few years ago, but not anymore.
The "New" models have a light weight rounded slide that is prone to cracking. I purchased one of these newer models in 40 S&W about a year ago. The slide cracked before I finished the first box of factory ammo. I had to send it back to Florida on my dime and include a check for $20 for return shipping. They replaced the slide with another "New" rounded slide. Well, long story short the slide cracked three times with less than 2 full boxes of ammo through it. Each time I had to send it back and pay for shipping.

The last time they replaced the slide with an older "Stronger" square top slide. Been running great ever since.
After new/old square top slide.

My suggestion, If you want to get an EAA 10MM, get the Elite Match, much better and stronger. And it's single action only.

If you want to ENJOY your gun, get a steel gun.
I enjoy both of my Delta Elites.
I really like my Witness Match in .40 S&W and wouldn't mind it in 10mm Auto.
The gun I liked the looks of was the EAA Witness Hunter, 6" bbl and slide, comp'd. in 10mm Auto.

Thank you for your usual lowbrow opinion, Night Train Breath...

It's too bad I didn't know you before they closed down Stand-Up Frank's - that was some SOOPREME slumming!!

Get the Glock 21 with the comp on it, HAS to be at least 3rd gen, where they have ALMOST cured Gaston's mistake of telling those Austrian dwarves in the mountains to dremel the hell out of the back of the chamber. DO NOT shoot DoubleTap or Buffalo Bore ammo out of a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Glock!! Very bad ju-ju!!

From another forum I post on:

Well, clearest evidence/endightment of the unsupported case I have ever seen. Yes, the original barrel looks like it was heavily Dremeled by an Austrian dwarf working at the Glock factory. Now, most 10mm ammo these days is watered down crap, and about 50 fps faster than 40 Short& Weak ammo. The two companies that sell the Real Deal are Corbon and Doubletap, and Doubletap sells the only equivalent original Norma factory load of 200 grains @ 1200 FPS. The factory spec is 200 grains @ 1200 with 10.0 grains of Blue Dot, and you can make a 180 go 1300 with 11.0 grains of Blue Dot, and a 165 go 1400 with 12.0 grains of Blue Dot. Was investigating the 165 grain data, and went .3 grains over 12 grains, and got one of the two bulged cases I have had in 40 years of reloading. The gun was an all stainless Delta Elite.

Now I know for a fact that Corbon gets in a FULL lot of powder (several tons at the very least), works up a load for it to meet the SAAMI spec of 37,500 PSI with their own pressure barrels, and runs out the full lot of powder with that load. I suspect DoubleTap does the same, and considering what they are doing, I think you can rule out an accidental overcharge like you get from some Kommie Bloc ammo.

Bottom line, Gaston EFFED up with his unsupported chamber design in 10mm with full power ammo, and the contours of the 3rd, and 4th gen barrels pretty much prove it.

Moral of the story: Don't shoot 10mm Corbon or Doubletap ammo in an original Glock barrel. Oh, and why do you think there is a disclaimer in the Redding GR-X debulger die that 40 S&W shot from Glocks should NOT be reprocessed with this die?
