My first pistol

Postby CarRacer on Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:31 pm

Well, I just traded for the first pistol I've ever owned and headed to the range I try it out. It's a Glock 21SF and I really enjoyed shooting it. I shot like crap the first two magazines I ran but finally figured out what I should be doing and started to hit where I was pointing. I think I may try a ccw class or a a pistol competition once I shoot it some more.

Great! Welcome to the world of pistols.

Have you taken a handgun familiarization or defensive pistol class? I would strongly recommend one (no I don't have any financial interest in that advice). There are several trainers in the index on this board, as well as at the ranges in town. I have taken defensive pistol twice and am still learning stuff that could save my life or keep me out of jail.

No, I haven't taken a class. Frankly I should because I know very litte about pistols. Also, everyday carrying is low on my list of goals but I figured that may be a route for learning.

I'd much prefer a general pistol class, anyone recommend one?

Welcome to pistols! My first pistol was a early generation Glock 21 (no rail, no finger grooves).

I took the basic handgun class from Bills (and subsequently the CCW class) with JT. I've also taken a few other low to intermediate level classes elsewhere to sharpen and refresh my skills. It's all money well spent! I might also suggest getting the Advantage Arms .22 kit, so that you can work on perfecting techniques using high volume, inexpensive live shooting.

+1, JT is a good guy with a TON of knowledge. they also have a Basic Handgun Familiar course that i've been told is very educational. otherwise, meet up with a member or two here, and i'm sure some unprofessional yet practical advice can be given for the grand sum of free. i'd be GLAD to meet up with you and offer some advice

Cool, I'd like to take you up on that offer. I have 250 rounds on order coming soon so when that shows up I'll have to get in contact with you. Dinner in trade for some pointers sounds like a fair deal to me. I'll pm you my cell, thanks for the offer again.

Edit: Holy ****. You're a machinist too. I'm really interested in changing careers to that, I'll have to buy you a beer with dinner so I can really pick your brain.

I stopped in to Bills again while rukwikenuf was working and he gave me a few pointers. Holding the gun like he showed me helped out my groupings a ton and I was able to comcenteate more on where I was aiming instead of worrying about my grip.

I'm starting to feel more comfortable with what I'm doing and think that with a few hundred rounds I can really build some muscle memory.

I had basic gun safety as a kid, but I never "learned" how to shoot from really anyone. I just bought my first hand gun a few months back and this article helped me out tremendously. Focusing on the front site is key, then it's focusing on the trigger pull.
