Not much real estate to work with in that case.

Personally, I don't like heavy optics on something that I am going to carry. Light option with magnification would be 1-4x scopes. If you don't mind it, holographic sight with a separate magnifier works, but they are not that great for real life application unless the magnifier is easily detachable (not just flip to side). That means you have to buy high quality mount for it to re-zero every time.

that's bushwah.... go look at primary arms. m4 "homage" for 60$. 3x magnifier for 99$. qd mount for 30$... no, it's not perfect, but it's damned good, hold zero, and you don't have to look at it and know if it's a house payment.

I like my Aimpoint T1 a lot. Mine is the 4 MOA. The 2 MOA just came out. That's what I would go with. You do not need magnification at 100 yards. The 2 MOA unit should be good to 200 too. Screw the magnifier. Want to go farther? Get a scope.

I run a Meopta 1-4 too. It's great glass. With a mount you will be at your $1000.

Finally, Weaver has a 1-5 that is just coming out. I'm very interested in learning more about it.

If you want to spend $1000 go right ahead, if you would like to spend under $400 the Burris MTAC is a really nice piece of glass. True 1-4X with a really nice IR. The more I shoot it, the more I like it. Off the bench I can make easy hits on 5" steel plates at 400 yards. Really suprised me how easy it is to shoot at longer ranges only being 4x. A lot of 3-gunners preffer it to the 2x the price, XTR's. Another option for you is Sightron will be coming out with a 1-7x scope. Not sure if I care for the recticle (it's just a duplex with an illuminated dot), but Sightron is well known for building "bang for your buck" optics.

I don't think that things that are supposed to multi-task do anything well. it is either a scope or a holographic sight, and not both IMHO. I need some magnification because I have bad eyes and 1-4/5X is an attractive option - at least for me.

I like the Idea of the Low-Mag Scopes that are specifically designed for CQB type guns - M4's and Mini-14's and the like... Magnification that is clear with a good set of crosshairs is hard to beat.

The newer low Mag Scopes are about as weight economical as many of the holo sights. Another thing that matters at least to me is that I really dont want a Critical Application Item on my gun that runs on BATTERIES. They always go bad at the worst times, fail, malfunction or whatever. I think that I have bad luck or somehting like it. Even the Low Mag Scopes that have a lit crosshair will work when the battery dies (and it will)...

Good Optics are important for target observation. When I was taking a long 4-day course with a Holo+magnifier, I got really tired really fast and got a headache from the distortion. YMMV, but all things being equal, I would strongly urge you to consider a low mag scope of good manufacture.

50 yards and beyond, low mag scopes might be helpful. Shooting both eyes open as for 50 yards and closer....a magnified optic will indeed likely induce headaches.

If it were me, if "quick and versatile" was my goal, I'd just concentrate on getting a good RDS like an Eotech EXPS series or Aimpoint PRO, add the magnifier if and when. $495 for an OPMOD, $400 for an Aimpoint PRO.

As for Eotech reticle, the multi-dot setup is cumbersome IMHO. It gives you some bullet drop info that might be helpful at longer range but pretty useless at less than 100 yards. The more important thing IME is accommodating HOB at closer ranges (25 yards and less). The 65 MOA ring gives a really good reference point for that, making a second red dot unnecessary.

I had an Aimpoint and swapped it out for the EOTech. I love the wider field of view and the nice big reticle.

This thread was great. It went through all good options fast and efficient with positive and negatives of it all. I had an Eotech go out on me in the middle of a 3-gun stage in Rolla, MO. Since it had absolute co-witnessing, no one ever knew until the stage was over and I said something. IMO you need to have your sights up or have solid sights any time you have a dot sight, even if it is one of the best... redundant sights ensure one will work.

The M4s is a nice optic for sure...but what would be its advantage compared to an Aimpoint PRO at 1/2 the pice? As to the Aimpoint magnifier...it's nice too, but $150 more than the Eotech...

The sight and the swing out magnifier can be had for a little over $500. I like my setup, but could only wish for a smaller dot.

Last week at Bill's North, I put twenty rounds through the target's center at 50 yards. Am very satisfied with my purchase.
