Initially, seat the bullet deliberatley too far out. Place in chamber and close and lock bolt.
Remove round. You will see some righteous rifling marks. This process will have seated
bullet farther into case. This a crude starting point.
Then, place this round into seater die. The Redding micrometer comes in real handy about
now. Spin micrometer down to make contact. Then spin down a little more, say, 0.010". At
this point it becomes a guessing game of sorts. Seat another, unmarked bullet in another
case at this setting. Chamber this rd. and check for rifling marks. If marks are still
pronounced ie. much longer than wide, then down another 0.010 or so on the micrometer.
This took me a few tries. Anyway, when the rifling marks are approx. 1/2 as long as they
are wide, I called that touching the lans. From that point, I could set the micrometer 2 or 3
thousandths lower and get no marks upon chambering. Then, whatever setting gave the
"touching lans" effect, I would double or triple check with another of same bullet type.
Then , make up a dummy rd. and record data on that case: mainly bullet type and
micrometer setting that yielded desired rifling marks. The "lans toucher dummy rd." if you
please. Every time I cha! nged the die setting for another bullet type, I would recheck the
"lans" setting to see if it still gave me the " just touching" effect. So far it has worked, it
just took some time. ;)

I havea forster bench rest Micrometer seater die for .338 Lapua, and a new Hornady concentricity tool.

That will work. If you are going to do this more than once or twice or with multiple rifles/chamberings, this is a very good investment and makes it very quick and easy to measure to the "lands":

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/570611 ... olt-action

I prefer this tool over some others available because it allows you to use the actual bullets that you will be loading for the rifle and Hornady makes the dummy cases for darn near every callable you can imagine.

Also, keep in mind that the throat will get longer as your round count increases, so the measurement is not a constant one and will need to be re-checked occasionally if you intend to maintain a particular amount of jump or jam...

I had a Surgeon Remedy in .338 LM a few years ago that was one of the most accurate rifles I have ever seen. It was responsible for some pretty astonishing 1000 yard groups with 300gr SMK's, even in heavy winds. I should have kept it, but felt the need for something bigger and better....

Good luck

Well I got a forester dial indicator seating die. Wow when I checked the cartridges after loading them, the worst run out was .003. The factory custom Hornady cartridges I bought to start my case inventory had some as far out as .006. Actually the PPU Serbian cartridges were better than the Hornady custom cartridges for twice as much money as far as run out and shot as good groups. This is a great seating die. I am going to run some through the gun tomorrow to see how they chronograph. It sure is fun to have a gun that gets me this excited. Looks like the weather is going to be ok for shooting tomorrow.

Cherokee 4 seater 160 hp, Horton stall kit. Full IFR and a Storm scope. My wife and son are pilots also. Guys do you have to use a bore guide if you use a composite cleaning rod? I was told no, I have bore guides for all my AR's in .223 and .308 but do not for a 700 LA REM. I guess another thing I have to buy.

You can never go wrong with a bore guide. Even with a composite rod, it can accumulate gime/grit.

I guess they do not cost that much. Hey I am going be a Boyt gun case dealer; I am going to make my first order. I sold gun cases in the past and it was always a hassle when a year later the zippers go out and the guy wants me to do something about it. Go to the site and if you think that you may be in need of the best gun cases made "they have the best zippers" but they are not cheap. I will do a heavy discount for the first order I make with them. http://www.boytharness.com/category.asp I also do gun transfer's for $20. Since Butch died out here I kind of took over his transfer responsibilities. joepenaz@planecents.net :P

Awesome. I find flying to be much more addicting than gun collecting. :D

Ok bad day good day, went out to shoot this afternoon, the .338 lapua was killer and I love it. I brought my .308 DPMS AP4 deer hunting rifle out to sight in the Nikon scope I just got back from repair. Shot about 50 rounds through it, at the end I had just 1 round left in the mag, I pulled the trigger and OMG, the bottom of the mag blew off and of course hit my hand (glove on though) I was using a sled for a bench rest. The bolt was back about ¼ inch and stuck. I took the gun apart at home down to the upper only and the bolt will not come out. My guess is a case separation. I was running a chronograph at the time and the last shot was 1710 and all the other .308’s were 2450. I am thinking taking it up to DPMS? I know of no one who knows about this gun. 612-327-3490 if you have anyother suggestions. Fisrt time I have ever had a rifle blow.

No the bolt as I said is stuck, I removed the upper from the gun, so you can see everything, I took a piece of aluminum rod hit it against the bolt slot in the bottom. Drove the bolt back but it stops just before the bolt turns enough to disengage the barrel locks. The bolt does turn but not enough to disengage or at least the bolt stops short.

I think I finally understand why they sell complete uppers. This bolt is not coming out of this thing.

Take handguards off, take barrel nut off, remove barrel and bolt together, take bolt apart, should be able to see case rupture that is locking bolt head to determine course of action.

You must have a piece of brass or??? wedged between the bolt and the upper, or in between the carrier. Sadly, IMHO the use of force comes to mind. :o :? With of course, including what oldman said.
