Huh?

If only there was a simpler solution.

A simpler solution like taking the profits out of the drug trade?

It's interesting to ponder what it would be like if drugs were legalized in the USA. It's even more interesting to wonder what it would be like if we invaded Mexico and spent close to a trillion dollars rebuilding our neighbor to the south. Unfortunately Saddam would still be in power.

Well, we could either spend a trillion or make a trillion. Tough to choose from those options.

Completely agree that this would be interesting. How much better/worse would our society (and Mexico's) be if we stopped making drug trafficking profitable?

Also, considering some of the media reports that come in, especially in regards to the ATF's recent fiasco, I wonder if there is some way in which our society benefits from a war on our border? From my own viewpoint, it often seems that many of our border policies contradict each other in a way that encourages Mexico's drug war.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree, just mulling hypotheticals...

I dont want to speak for "him". But I would guess legalizing drugs and taxing them would make a lot of money. Whether or not a trillion is realistic I dont know, but it beats spending it, to pretend you are stopping it.

Agreed. A trillion seems like a pipe dream though. It took the Gov't decades to spend a trillion on the "war on drugs".....and they achieved none of the results they were aiming for. Plus, you already have black market competition with states that have legalized medical marijuana. You just have to wonder how long it would take for the gub'ment to tax marijuana out of the market like they have done with cigarettes in some states

How much do we spend on prisons a year? Eliminate...oh, let's say half that. Not just from pot, but all the ancillary crimes that are committed as a result of it.

I think Cali is bringing in over a billion in taxes from it too. Or maybe the budget shift was 2B due to the reduced enforcement costs. It's significant in any event.

I can't argue with that, I actually wrote a thesis on this subject in college and your comments are easy to back up with facts.
