What to buy? Typical newb question

Postby wildfan1 on Sat Mar 03, 2012 4:14 pm

So I'm looking to buy a new handgun. Semi-auto, and likely 9mm. Like the 9 as I will do a lot of target shooting, and ammo is cheapest. will likely be also getting a 10mm, .40, or .45 before too long too. I found what I think is a really good deal on a brand new Sig Sauer 9mm P2022, only $419 cash price with two clips and two grips. I have not shot it yet, but previously owned a sig and loved it. This one had great feel for me. Fit my hand good, shooting position with it was comfortable and natural.

My dilemma is that my brother in law and I recently went to the range. He has a Walther P99 AS. I put 5 clips through it. I wish I had saved the targets for pics. I've never shot a handgun better. First clip shot almost all the orange out. 15 shot clip, 15 yards, all shots in the 10 circle, and all but 4 in the orange. Out of 75 shots at 15 yards, I had 2 in the 9 circle, 7 in the 10 circle, and 66 in the orange.

So back to my dilemma....Sig P2022 for $419, or Walther P99 AS for about $650? Or do you guys have some other suggestions? I saw a couple posts about the S&W MP that looks real nice. I also previously had a S&W .40 and liked that gun as well.

So anyway, I'm looking. Leaning to the P2022 for first purchase, but think it may be a tad big for everyday C&C. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Matt

Might not be comparing apples to apples. What kinda Sig did you own before? I found the P2022 was nothing like a P220.

Standard MNGT response... "go to Bills, shoot them both".

Dont forget to ask for extra "clips" too. Maybe rent a Glock "Fotay" to compare it to.

Happy gun hunting! Welcome to MNGT.

+1 on renting them both before buying. You may even find something you like better

You could always shop around for a clean, used P99 if that is what you really want and a new one is out of your price range. There are a lot of the SW99's (same gun, Smith and Wesson built and stamped their name on) for around $300 on the auction sites.

If you buy solely on price, you are sure to disappointed.

You remember the VALUE of a product long after the PRICE you paid I'd forgotten.

Rent a Ruger SR9 while you're at Bills.

M&P9 is very nice. Lots of competitors are switching to M&Ps for a reason, I figure.

Cost isn't a MAJOR consideration. I want a good, reliable, ACCURATE gun. Just trying to save a little $ where I can as I am going to be buying a varmint rifle, scope, etc right around the same time. Would like to keep the cost of both in the $1,500 range. I have experience with Sigs (sorry, don't remember the model, but it was a full frame model I bought new in about 1997-1998) so thought for the price that P2022 was a hell of a deal. Love my brother in laws Walther, but he won't part with it dammit. LOL. So just thought I'd get ideas. Think you guys are right, Bill's for some test firing might be the best bet. Does the Bill's in Blaine have a good selection to choose from and test fire, or is the Robbinsdale location a better bet?

I'd go to Robinsdale. Check out a Springfield XDm 9mm. I absolutely LOVE mine. It feels great in my hand and you can't beat 19+1 capacity.
