Ok, I'll bite; why would you mount a scope on top of a detachable carry handle? :hmm:

This is my deer hunting rifle, I use this for shots up to 300 yards. My deer stand in right in the middle of my 3000’ private air strip (1MN2) at my lake home in Akeley MN. I also use it to do drives. I compete in CMP and I am real comfortable with Iron sights. I actually feel naked without them. Last week end we were shooting at FRPC at 400 yards with M14’s (the real M14’s) with nothing but peep sights. A .308 in my opinion is not much good after 400 yards for deer unless you want to chase it and I do not ( I worry about chronic wasting) so I do not like spine shots. That being said: about the only way to get the best of both worlds is what I have. I have just purchased and set up the .338 LM that I will have in my stand for the 500+ yard shots I have had to pass on when at my runway deer stand like last year. Call me a ***** but I almost cry when I have to chase a wounded deer.

Cool, so you can see the sights underneath the scope and use either/or?

You've mentioned the CMP shooting a couple of times, do you plan on shooting any matches this season or do you just stick to the club-level stuff? If you do, we might bump into each other. I shoot a little Highpower myself.

My coach says I should and that I am good enough, I did not think I was. So this year I may do it. I am going to do a lot of shooting at 400 and 600 this year. I am a member of Faribault R&P again so having that I am retired, I can go there during the day when ever I want. Easter I am bringing the rifles up to my lake home and will practice there to get dialed in. That is a 1000 yard private runway I have for my plane. It would be fun to meet you and shoot some time.

Yeah, just come out and shoot - it's fun no matter how good you are. Local matches in MN will see everything from first-time shooters to some of the best in the country. For the most part, you are really just competing against yourself anyways. Set high but attainable goals for yourself and enjoy reaching them. Show up for a Leg Match and you will be welcomed with open arms - guys in the hunt for the DR badge love having new shooters show up for those!

I'm a member at FRPC also, but I rarely get down there - maybe 1 or 2 times per year. It's just completely the wrong direction for me and I have memberships at other clubs that generally work out better for me. I really like the range though and love being able to shoot at 100, 200, 300 and 400 all from the same position. It's a fun place for the .50 as well.

It’s been a week plus since I sent 35 rounds down the barrel of my .338 lapua magnum out of the lead sled. My right shoulder still hurts real badly. I have a spot in the right shoulder blade that is really painful. I do not think this should be shot without real recoil protection. I am not kidding I really hurt.

Sounds like you need a good recoil pad. I doubt you need a reminder to keep the rifle tight to you shoulder, but if you're not I would HIGHLY recommend it.

Such a deal I have for you !!!

Actually I'm not interested in selling either of mine, but if you get started with 50's, give me a call, I will help you down the right track on reloading the 50BMG, saving you money in long run, although at first you will doubt that statement.

I'm not a great shooter, but I have FUN doing it!

If you have questions on which type of gun to buy, give me a call and we will discuss options.

AND I highly recommend joining the FCSA at: http://www.fcsa.org

I'm the Match Director at Alliance Nebraska FCSA Matches and can get you started there with or without equipment, including a rifle. (Just don't outshoot me with my own rifle). You could fly in to Alliance, one of the shooters would pick you up there and bring you to the motel we stay at. I take a trailer out with all the equipment, supplies, and my shooting STUFF.

Well, 1 Hornady automatic electronic powder measure. 1 Hornady oal gauge, 1 headspace case measure, 1 Hornady bullet coax unit. Have ready when needed: case trimmer, outside neck trimmer, I get one round out about every 15 minutes now.

It has been over two weeks and my shoulder still is sore. I got the kick blocker from a MNGT guy , he designed it and it looks cool. Not what you would want on it for hunting but it really looks like it will world for killing targets. He said he did the calculations and it will drop the recoil to 9lbs. I think you could permanently hurt yourself with this gun if you are not careful. It must be impossible to shoot the .50 off the shoulder without serious pads.

I have a Sako .338 LM with their muzzle brake, and I can shoot this Rifle all day long with no problem. I would think you need a good muzzle brake and your set!

The 50's kick(felt recoil) less than the 338 because the guns weigh 32+ pounds and MUST have an efficient muzzle brake.

With a hi-speed camera, I've watched my gun recoil about 3/4" with muzzle brake pulling it back forward about 1/2".

I know several shooters that shoot "free recoil" - not shouldering firearm at all off benchrest equipment.

You need an efficient brake on that 338 - it will be LOUD, but you will be able to shoot it.
But then maybe you need a smaller rifle and leave the 338 & 50's to "The Ladies 50 Shoot". :D
