Non-electric "quick access" gun box?

Postby EJSG19 on Sat Mar 24, 2012 8:24 pm

I sorta hate electric anything when it comes to reliability so...

what do you guys have in place, and are happy with for bed side gun safes or "safe" weapon storage? Right now mine is in a holster on the bed, ready to go. But, against my better judgement in a true DGU scenario, I am considering some sort of "gunvault" or quick access device, for relatives children visiting, other possible upcoming circumstance changes, etc.

Key criteria here is that the device does not allow access to the weapon for unauthorized children. (picture your 6 yo's best friend coming over and exploring the bedroom without anyone knowing it, or whatever scenario floats your boat) The quicker it is to retrieve the weapon for use the better, but it needs to be 10 yr old and younger proof within reason.

1. Rest assured, if the need arises I am fully aware that having no device between you and your weapon is ideal, I won't argue that so lets not waste time debating that aspect in this thread por favor.
2. SWMBO may not have a stroke at age 30 however, if I were to employ one of these at least while any and all rugrats are of a less than controllable age/nature.

Meanwhile, if there are absolutely no high quality options, then please recommend your electronic gizmos as plan B.

This is the safe I use on my night stand. It is electronic but has a key on the front as well.

At night I stick the key in it, I can open it is a second, but if the kids try I will hear it and wake up, the lid is spring loaded.

I have a V-Line Top Draw and love it. I got mine at Cabelas. No key, no electronics, just a tough mechanical safe.

Again V-line.

I have 2 and think they are top shelf. In the past I have had problems with electronic locks, enough that I do not want to bet my family's safety on.

I love my Titan Gun Vault. http://www.titangunvault.com/gun-safe/titan-gun-vault

No electronics. I have mine bolted to the bed frame. It comes with the mounting hardware. When you open the door an integrated holster slides out and serves you the weapon. With the door open it's easy to remove the safe from the mount. It becomes a portable safe that I use for safe weapon transportation to the cabin up north. Not cheap though.

Outstanding, I'd never heard of the V-line or the Titan. Titan looks slick but is probably out of my budget.

Anyone else?

V-Line vaults use Simplex locks, widely considered to be the best push button combo locks you can get. Expensive but will last a lifetime

FWIW I've seen the V-Line Top Drawer model @ Bill's if you're closer to there than Cabela's and want to check it out. V-Line also makes a Desk Mate model that is more similar to the Titan and very much less expensive too. http://www.deansafe.com/vli-2597-s.html ... 4AodwxekDg

I have the desk mate mounted under my bed frame. If you have a dust ruffle ( yup, I'm married ) it can't be seen unless you lay down on the floor. I can get into it just by feel while still in bed.

Love mine and highly recommend it for others. I think Bill's had a V-Line on sale but maybe not this one.

I have 3, one flush wall mount and two of the drawer type that you can mount to a bed frame.

I have all three set with the same combination and no batteries to fail.

I wish what used to be a 15 minute drive wasn't now a 4 hour drive, or I would.

Are they going to be on sale? I'm also in the market for something like this.
