New plinker...

Postby gimmefuel on Wed May 09, 2012 8:50 pm

Sold my AR10 (.308) this past week. Heavy, impractical, sort of expensive & not terribly fun to shoot.
So then I went and ordered something else heavy(for what it is), (kind of) impractical, (sort of) expensive but should be alot of fun to shoot
Now I've hunted w/ rifle, hunted w/bow, for some reason I got a boner to hunt w/ a handgun. Now I know I could have got a .44mag and got the job done, but c'mon...
So after doing a bunch of research and digging I decided on a 460S&W. Then it was a matter of which model, figured if i was gonna spend a buttload on a "standard" model I might as well put down the extra and get a Performance Center model.
So this came in monday, can't wait to shoot it this weekend:

Gotta start saving for an optic. Either a Leupold ($$$$ ) or a Burris. Want to actually put my hands on them before I decide.

I have a Leupold 2X and a 4X handgun scope I used on hunting pistols. I HIGHLY recommend using the 2X for hunting purposes with a revolver like yours. I used them on a 444Marlin in a re-chambered TC/Contender back in early '80's, and it still survives yet today.

NICE GUN your S&W 460 !!!!

You MUST RELOAD for it to get its true potential, and for you to learn its recoil pattern. Use a slower burning powder to reduce felt-recoil that also best utilizes the 8.375" barrel length.

But be sure to HAVE FUN in a safe manner.

Don't overshoot at beginning, so you don't develop a FLINCH.

Made it to the range today. 15 rounds, 200gr FTX Hornady, 5@ 25 yards(all on a bag), 10@ 50 (7 on a bag, 3 standing). All with open sights.
Where to start....well its big, we know that. But not unwieldy. Although I will be buying a shooting monopod for hunting. The trigger in dbl. action is pretty stiff, only shot it once that way. Probably the last time I ever will too. Single action is honestly the lightest trigger I've ever shot on a revolver. Feels like the 3lb I have on my 10/22. Its sharp, no creep whatsoever. The recoil was intense, but not harsh or unpleasant. The force seemed to be directed straight back and muzzle flip was minimal. Its freaking loud, especially under the canopy. My gf who took the pics was standing about 8 ft away said she could feel the blast wave. Gotta admit, I could feel a bit of heat on my arm during each shot. From 25yds I kept all but one shot in the center diamond. @ 50 it was a bit tougher, the front HiViz sight is plenty big and bright but covered the whole target. kept them all on paper though. Needless to say I'll be a bit more confident taking this hunting once i get a scope on it.
All in all, I'm VERY impressed w/ this gun, not only with the craftsmanship but also its ability to handle this round.
