30-06

Wasn't the .223 designed to wound, not kill, back in Vietnam?

The best ones start with a .30 ;)

If you must go with a .223, use a heavy bullet and do not load to crazy velocities.

Plenty of folks will chime in about how a .223 is plenty for deer. Do what you want. After seeing some well placed .243 shots fail to make quick kills, I don't use anything under .270 win. To each their own. This is a question asked all over the internet that usually provokes emotional and strong responses, I guess it was a matter of time before the question was asked here.

Yes it was. With .308 it would kill 1 one person. With.223 it would injure 1 person and it would take 2 more to carry the injured person off the battle field. Thus removing 3 people from battle! :geek:

I'm 5 for 5. All shot over a small food plot, no obstructions, with a max range of 125yds.

55g gameking has put each of them down cleanly with none going further than 30yds after the shot.

But I would only use them in a similar situation. If there is any brush or other obstructions, i would not even consider it. Shot placement is critical, and you should be prepared to pass on any shot that is high risk in the name of good hunter ethics.

Took 2 Bucks a couple years ago with a .243, @ 120 yards. One dropped where it was ( double lung ) and the other went 40 yards. Hope to take one this year with a .223!

After you get a couple with the .223, try a 17 hornet! Seriously though, you have a .243 and want to switch to a .223? :(

No doubt most cartridges will kill a deer, plenty of deer have been dropped by the good 'ole 22 lr.

Un till you see a monster Buck @200 yards behind some brush and can't help but to shoot..Gets deflected from the perfect shot on the pump station.Injures the deer kills it three or four days later and becomes coyote or wolf food! Good luck
+1 for me with .270 or higher

It can will work in the right hands, but should be a last resort. You can pick up a cheap surplus rifle that will give you 100 yard accuracy and much better killing power. My opinion is worth what you paid for it :D
