Legal amount of ammunition to own.

Backstory: I found a decent deal on 1k rounds of 5.56 so I placed order and when it was delivered, I wasn't home, my neighbor saw the box and was going to put inside their home until I came over to get it (we do that for each other for safety, have had a few things stolen when someone wasn't home and delivery left on doorstep). They saw the box print, picked it up and then set it back as they where not comfortable touching ammo (to each their own). When he saw me the next day, he asked what I was doing with "so much ammo". I replied I target and competition shoot, and 1k rounds is not that much ammo, 2-4 range trips or competitions will eat that in a hurry. He then replies "1K!?! your stockpiling ammo, that's illegal!" I replied, no, it's not, I've never seen a state or federal statute that limits the number of rounds you can have on hand. My question after searching the net and finding vague information (some say it is, others say it isn't, and can't seem to find a definite answer in Federal laws, there's a bit about "explosive powder storage", but nothing about loaded ammo), is whether or not there is a law either in Minnesota, or U.S. overall, on the number of rounds you can stock.

Your neighbor needs to A.) Mind his own business; B.) make sure he knows what the law is before accusing someone of breaking it and C.) Mind his own business.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

No limit privately unless your city has a special ordinance. If you're a business different rules apply.

Or he needs to lie better when he realizes his neighbor is a bit of a nutcase when it comes to firearms & ammo. :)

How much room do you have in your house?? That's your answer.

They do have regulations on ho much raw gun powder you have in a house for fire code reasons. Once it is contained in a brass case and topped with a bullet you are good to go. I wouldn't consider 1,000 rounds stockpiling, not by a long shot. That's a weekend trip to South Dakota, maybe if I am packing light. I know shooters that keep 100,000+ on hand, now that is stockpiling. Still not illegal.

Stack it as high as you want.

I seem to remember something about storing primers.
Was it 10,000 of each type?
Again, just components, not ammunition.

Might be written into the national fire code regs. Maybe there is a fire marshal or inspector on this forum who could chime in.

ONLY 1000 rounds?? If it was illegal (it isn't) you would think it would also be illegal to sell that quantity. I rarely shoot less than a few hundred rounds of rifle or pistol or both when I go to the range and if you shoot any competition it goes much faster than that.

That's just the rifle. I never said how much.....if any...... ;) pistol or shotgun ammo I had on hand.

This.^ And D.) Accept your invite to the range to see how much fun it is, followed by E.) Develops an interest in acquiring his own quantity of ammo.

Last summer when I got 4000 bullets delivered the lady next door signed for them for me. We share a front steep. When I got home she asked me what was in the box because it is so dam heavy. After I told he, she looked at me and said. "I know where I'm going when SHTF. Now when she sees the boxes with heavy marked all of them she just looks at me and smiles.

oddly, the postman left me a PICK IT UP AT THE POST OFFICE note yesterday instead of attempting to re-deliver my bullets. He also marked the sheet "VERY HEAVY" :-)

Leave a note for your postman telling him to not be such a wimp.
