well its summer and I want to find something closer than 1/2 an hour up the gunflint from town. I have no idea where bear pit road is?[thanks though-tell me more?] it shows up near Silver Bay when I try google maps. If I do find bear pit rd will I see the pit on the side of the road while driving? :(

google maps, then look for the light colored areas off small roads. warning, many gravel pits up here are gated off. i found 2 pits up in the Cloquet Valley state forest, so im gonna shoot out there. some ass clowns, probably locals, have been shooting clay pigeons, and other stuff out there, and leaving garbage behind. hopefully they dont shut the road, or the pits down. i typed in bear pit road, Duluth in google maps, and followed it a bit and i think i saw a gravel pit, but its not on forest land, so anything goes. you could get kicked out, or bothered, but i doubt it. on the forest land, its free to target shoot per DNR so you really cant be bothered if it aint private land.

I too am looking for a safe place to shoot near Grand Marais MN. I looked around on google maps and found a couple spots of what look to be gravel pits:

and
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=47.844328 ... 15&iwloc=A
Does anyone know if these are good places to shoot?

Also, does anyone know what this area is:

well thats on National forest land. i know that state land you can target shoot but im not sure if national forest land has any difference. the first pit you listed looked pretty good, but when i was looking, i looked for pits a little smaller than your last two. the second one looks like its still in use, and probably wont work. id look for smaller, unused pits. i found some over by duluth that i went to today. it was fun. i was checked up on by two st. louis county vehicles. they were fine with me shooting as long as i cleaned up. good luck

I didn't, but decided to check it out. There is a gate at the entrance with a chain and padlock. It looks like someone with horses can open it because their tracks go through the gate. The whole time in the pits I could hear someones chainsaw so all the neighbors down on the road would probably hear your fire? The horse people could get pretty mad when they show up and heard reports? I have no idea who's in charge but there is a bunch of equipment ( not too long out of service ) there too. I wouldn't do it unless I knew everybody ( I don't ).
