It has to be me, right?

Postby XDM45 on Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:54 pm

Ok, so just a quickie here....

I go to the range to practice, I'm banging 'em out hitting a nice tight area with my .22LR, bam bam bam hit hit hit on the mark every time center of mass. No problem whatsoever. Yeah me. So what's the problem? For the life of me, I can't hit the same with my XDm 45. I hit the target, but lower. It's not going where I'm aiming it, so either A) the sights are off, which I doubt, but it IS possible.... or what's more likely is B) *I* am off and need to learn to shoot the 45 better than I am.

I blame the shooter, not the gun..... but be that as it may, I still want to rule out a possible (even as remotely as that is) problem with the sight alignment. The gun isn't modified in ANY way, so how do I check the sight alignment?

How much lower than point of aim and at what distance? Is it straight down or off to a side a little too? Are you sure you aren't pulling the trigger or anticipating the recoil more after switching from a 22? Have you fired the gun before without issue? Everyone has a bad day at the range.

I have a lot of questions.
If you are reading this, there is a better than average chance that you are a d-bag.

Sure, if you want to give it a go, I don't have a problem with you trying it out.

Probably 3" - 6" I'm guessing....

GunGoogler wrote:Is it straight down or off to a side a little too?

Some of both.

GunGoogler wrote:Are you sure you aren't pulling the trigger or anticipating the recoil more after switching from a 22?

Yes, positive of that...and I'm not slapping the trigger either.

GunGoogler wrote:Have you fired the gun before without issue? Everyone has a bad day at the range.

Fired it before, but never really be "on" with it.

Try focusing on your point of aim and not so hard on the sights. I bet your shooting low right? Your pulling the trigger, IMHO. Been there, Done that. DonL on the board here helped me a ton with my shooting when I first started. He's at Bville Pistol range quite often, check with him when your there.

Try a G21, that should fix the issues

hehe that's funny you mention Don L.

His name keeps getting kicked back towards me a lot recently. I have another thread on here about getting my PTC and some defensive training, which I've decided to get from Don L. ( I think many people get their PTC, but lack the proper training for stress, defensive situations - let alone if shooting occurs - and much more) Likewise, I had that very same thought to call Don about my shooting and even stop by BPR to have someone there test it out for me. I'm a member at both BPR and HSC, just like Don is, and in fact, HSC is where I was shooting today.

( I also only started shooting again in April 2012 after having 25-30 years away from shooting anything, so I took the Basic Pistol course at BPR as well for a refresher / re-starting point.)

I'm also considering replacing the sights with something easier for me to see, but that's not an excuse, just an aid. I should be able to pick up any weapon and shoot halfway decently with it. I really do thing this is a case of it being the shooter, not the gun. If you aren't hitting the mark with an XDm, it's you, not the gun most likely. It seems to be a very good gun.

No disrespect to the Glock fans out there, but Glocks just aren't for me. They are a fine weapon, cops and many other people use them, I just don't care for them.

I was thinking about going Monday lmk

I think people have better luck with Glocks because of the trigger, crisp breaking point makes it less likely for me to jerk the gun. That is just my .02

Another vote for a session with DonL. I had a left pull that was driving me nuts. An hour with him, he fixed me. I'm shooting better than I ever have.

I can't speak about Don's training, but he is a great guy! I was privileged to participate in hammARs truncated .22 rifle league with him. Very disappointed that we were asked to quit.

What size XDM are you shooting? I have the 3.8" .45 and I had a helluva time at first. Same thing, I was shooting low and left. I was dry firing the pistol just fine at home, but when I'd get to the range it'd all go to ****. The more I've practiced though, I have been able to correct. I was somewhat pulling the trigger.

I have kinda bigger hands. And on the smaller xdm, my trigger finger has to come way back to break the trigger. It doesn't help that the stock xdm trigger breaks further towards the rear of the pistol. Because of this I realized that my strong hand grip fingers were moving and pulling the pistol down and left slightly by the time the trigger was breaking. I've really had to work to shoot straight with this gun. I'm still not perfect with it, but I have improved.

Also, on the flush fitting magazine, I've put a pierce extension grip(bought from thunderjohn:)). That helped me some too. I was more comfortable with a place for my pinky. Not sure which xdm you have though.

I'm also hoping to put the PRP trigger kits in both my Xdm's eventually. I've read nothing but great things about them on xdtalk.
