Clearly a case of self defense. The officer was obviously an unwilling participant. I'm sure the union will take care of one of their finest.

Isn't the saying "one bad apple will spoil the bunch"? Just saying.

Exactly. Apples give off a chemical when bruised that cause the rest in the bushel to go bad. That's where the saying comes from.

Here's Clifford's statement:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html

According to the criminal complaint, Clifford told police he was at the bar with his wife and others to talk about National Night Out, and that he “took offense to some language” Vanderlee was using and asked him to stop.

Clifford told authorities Vanderlee stopped using the offensive language for five to 10 minutes, but started using it again. Clifford said he went over to Vanderlee, and when Vanderlee stood up and cursed, Clifford punched him, thinking he was going to be hit himself.

Of course, none of the witnesses saw any of this, except those in Clifford's party...

Good thing Clifford went home to sober up, lawyer up, and get his story straight. He's now on "home assignment".

I wonder if "home assignment" equates to paid administrative leave.

Head injuries are so unpredictable. A guy can take one punch, hit his head on the concrete, and die. I've seen others hit repeatedly then kicked while on the ground, and they require no more than a treat-and-release. It's a total crap shoot.

I'm interested in what will happen with this case.

Yes. Although I have seen some "home assignments" that actually require you to sit at home between set hours and remain available... But basically, yes... Paid time off.

Turns out, the victim works for the Strib. Maybe trial-by-media won't work so well for the good officer.

http://www.startribune.com/local/north/159485595.html

The Anoka Sheriff seems to be leaning towards the victim's side, too.

The guy he was talking to on the phone was just outside, and saw Clifford leave. He says that the victim wasn't being loud, nor using bad language.

Sgt. Clifford has been with the department since 1993 and is currently the executive officer of the SWAT team.

Because you want the level-headed guys for the SWAT team. Yikes.

You think David Clifford is a thug? Or is he a good man that did something tremendously stupid?

Think hard about that one.

Thug.

I'm sure this is the VERY first time he's ever started a fight in his life. Isn't it amazing how they always get caught the very first time?!

I can say that, because I've never been in a fight in my life. They are pretty easy to avoid, especially if you run fast.
