A Quick question on Minnesota Permits.

When I was at Ahlman's a while back I was told a law change occurred and now a PTP is not required to purchase an AT-15. Maybe we have an FFL in the forum that can clarify.

A law change hopefully WILL occur (HF 161) that will make permits unnecessary, but I'm unaware of anything removing this requirement yet.

Unless Ahlman's is doing single transfers for assault rifles, in which case you wouldn't need a permit but you would have to wait a week.

I asked around and got the skinny on this:

A few weeks back, the Minnesota Attorney General sent a memorandum to several police departments stating that as of June 1st, no Permit to Purchase would be required to purchase semi-automatic military style firearms, "assault weapons", in Minnesota. Many people were advised of this by these police departments and in turn some gun dealers stopped requiring permits for these sales.

The memo was sent in error and has been revoked. The Attorney General affirms that these sales DO still require a permit, and the memo was sent in error. It is no fault of the police departments or the gun stores that stopped requiring them. The State made a mistake.

This might well explain why I was asked only for my DL for an AR transfer on 15 June.

Well Mankato got the PTP out quickly. I applied for it on Wednesday the 20th and got the permit by the 23rd. I have to say I am pretty happy with the way things went. Thanks to everyone for the help.
