If you want more accuracy, get a non chrome-lined barrel. Fluting increases the surface area & helps dissipate heat. Heavy profile barrels are good for sustained fire, ie. prairie dog shooting. The twist rate depends on the bullet weight you will be using.

fer myself, I've found a "Dissipator" bbl dissipates heat rather nicely!

however, if ya might prefer mock-dissipation, ya could otherwise try a mock-Dissipator bbl! ;)

Mk12 ... in case ya need a couple extra inches! :?

IIRC 1/9 is best for accuracy with all types of ammo. Most accurate, with what I've been told,is with .223 chamber. But you should not use 5.56 ammo in .223 chambers, limiting your ammo choices. All the AR's I do/have owned were chambered for 5.56,not .223.I do have a full length heavy barrel, mid length, chrome lined upper that has sniper type accuracy @100 yards. At 200 it is okay.I've never fired it past 200 yards.Much of your accuracy will depend on ammo.Find what your rifle likes and use it.

Accuracy should be better at 200 than 100. If not, you're not doing your part. .223 vs 5.56 doesn't matter. What matters more is what type of round you're shooting. Obviously mk262 mod 1 is going to own M193.

Yeah I just use what ever mil spec ammo I can get cheap. It's usually XM193.My .308 sniper rifle is my long range precision paper punch.I bought a bunch of South African military ammo that I didn't expect to be very accurate, but wow!I am able to do a 5 round group at 200 yards that I can cover with a quarter.

Ideally for precision, you should be looking at the following options:

-Heavy match barrel in 16-20" length
- 1:7 or 1:8 twist
-5.56 or .223Wylde chamber
-Free-float handguard/rail
-Low-profile gas block to allow the use of optics
-M4/A4 type flattop upper
-Muzzle brakes are optional (but a good idea. Better than flash hiders)

Most high accuracy heavy barrels are 410 Stainless Steel. Stainless steel barrels tend to be the most accurate, and they're also pretty plentiful. There are numerous versions on the market, but a majority of them will be in the 16" or 18" range. Both 16" and 18" are the most common, and 18" is really the most you need for length. Barrel twist is somewhat preferential, but the best accuracy comes from the heavier 75gr and 77gr bullets, and heavier into the 80gr range. 1:9 twist works for bullets up to around 69gr, and is not the optimal twist rate. 1:8 will work up to the 77gr loads, which is right where you would want to be, while still stabilizing loads like the 68gr and 69gr bullets. The 1:7 will stabilize the same loads as the 1:8, but can go heavier into the 80gr range.
Getting a chamber in 5.56 or .223Wylde is preferential, and based more on who you are buying from. I prefer a full 5.56 spec barrel, but it's really Ford vs Chevy. The key is to make sure you're not getting the .223Rem SAAMI spec chamber, because those CANNOT shoot the 5.56 loads. When you are shooting precision long range, shooting 5.56 pressures give you the best performance. I use Lake City brass for all of my reloads, as I can reload them to higher pressures without problems. My hand loads are the same specs as Mk262 mod 1 ammunition.
You also need a free float handguard or rail system. This is a big deal, as it prevents any user-created deviation of the barrel during shooting.

If you want good barrels, look into Noveske, BCM, Rainier Arms or WOA.

If you want a built upper, check out BCM or Noveske for a properly built system that will be sub-MOA capable.
