Pioneer Press - "65% increase in St Paul "gun violence"

http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_ ... reports.v6

I call schnanegans on their reporting method and math skills. From the article...

The Pioneer Press looked at two categories of reports for police service in St. Paul -- "shots fired" and aggravated assaults with guns. The numbers don't speak to whether police found evidence that a crime took place.

For shots fired, especially, police say they check out every report, but can't always verify whether the sound someone heard was a gun fired vs. a car backfiring, firecrackers or something else.

So no evidence of a crime, and it includes numbers that may not even be gun fire.

Plus, any increase has an easy explanation... when Mpls turns up the heat, where do the thugs go?
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Living in St Paul I looked at the incidents that were reported within a block or so of my home..
...all they were was reports, and I don't recall hearing of any of them previously.
What I have observed is an increase of fireworks- many of them aerial displays with a report, that, if you hadn't seen it, one might mistake it for gunfire.
Another observation, the city, police dept, and media bend over backwards to assert how safe the city is and how ever-decreasing the various rates of crime are....something I personally write off to underreporting.
So to bring attention to increased 'gun violence' is a bit odd, at best.

I hear fireworks where I'm at every couple of nights, they do sound like gun fire every once in a while.

Fireworks, good governor -- in the last few years I'd say (anecdotally) that the number of people shooting off morters and anything with a "report" has increased exponentially in my neighborhood. From afar to an untrained ear they sound like gunfire! Every night through the window I'd say I hear 25-30 instances of "gunfire"!

The Pioneer Press reporter who wrote the article responded to my comment questioning the "65% rise in 'gun violence'" on their Facebook page by saying their statistic was calculated using "police reported incidents involving a firearm or suspected gunfire"...I'd hardly call that "violence".

I can hear Joan typing up a storm right now...just waiting for her and Heather to hit Twitter this morning. There was an editorial in the Strib today which solidified their viewpoint as well. http://www.startribune.com/opinion/edit ... 03105.html

Gun culture is a threat to us all

No mention of the "thugs" of course who perpetrate the violence.

I see what you did there.

I also agree on the fireworks comments. For the last month here in Birdtown it has happened a lot and if you didn't know what it was on some nights, you'd think you were in Syria or something. Just kids (real ones and "over-sized") having fun.

Maybe someone's already posted this article (sorry in advance if this is dup info), but the Star Tribune is on the gun rant, too; now not just in the editorials, either. The ATF was in town because of the reported uptick in St Paul shootings.

The Strib published a correction today about Dolan and Rybak's press conference over shootings in N Mpls....telling....

Strib wrote:CORRECTION

A June 28 editorial incorrectly stated that both Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak support Canadian-style gun registration. Rybak does not advocate that specific approach; rather, his focus is on cracking down on illegal guns.

Seems reasonable by Rybak.

Rybak's choice of terminology: " illegal guns" is a bit of disingenuous . When questioned about the term, he said he meant stolen guns, and guns in the hands of minors.
I wonder if he's ever used the term illegal bicycles or illegal automobiles when describing stolen bicycles, cars, or the vehicles driven by the under-aged as 'illegal vehicles'...And as to gun registration, he stated that he respects Dolan, and recognizes Dolan knows more about guns and North Mpls than he(Rybak) does, but he(Rybak) "...is not ready for registration...just yet..."

I like that...I'm going to start using it. If I steal a pack of gum, that is an illegal pack of gum!

What do you expect? The boy mayor want's to be governor and knows the outstate DFL'ers would never go for Canadian-style registration.

Why don't they just make it a law where its mandatory to use the NICS system for civilians to sell any firearm. It covers their ass and keeps guns in good peoples hands. It's not that difficult to make a 1800number call. It would keep the gun control people happy.

Hell make it mandatory to see a ptp.. most of us already do it.. All policticians need to get their heads out of their ass a get something done. The republicans can do more to help keep our 2nd amendment rights
