South Dakota Dogs

Postby Hammered Squirrel on Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:23 am

So I'm going out to my buddies cabin in SD in August and we are planning on doing a little pdog hunting. What licenses would I need in order to shoot some of them buggers? If I even need one at all...

Thanks in advance

Depends - are you on a res or just state land. Each reservation has it's own fish and game laws and its own permits.

^this

Some reservations require a guide accompany you. Inside the res, there are blocks of private land that you only need the state license.

We are going to be hunting on private and state land. Thanks for all the info guys. This being my first p dog shoot, I can't wait to get out there and see what my guns can do. I sold the long range .233 to fun my AR, so the .308 is going to come into play. Muahahaha

You sick bastard :D , I smoked a gopher that wandered onto our range at about 325 yds with my .308 about a little while ago :D . Expensive, but fun. Even the cheap Lake City Nato 7.62 ammo is accurrate enough for dogs out to 350 and a little beyond ...out of my 700 build anyway ;)

Haha Shhhh Dont tell everyone, I also have a bull barrel 17HMR that Im bringing out there, so it wont be the most expensive shoot of my life. I wish I had a 700 in .308....Mine is just a light barrel savage w/ the Accutrigger. BTW that is nice.

grousemaster didnt you just snap up a 700 in .308 last night?

How is the shooting on public non res land. I have a rock river .223 that has yet to see any action except for the range.

I was on the national grasslands south of Lemmon and worked our way to Lodgepole where we stayed last weekend. the first towns on friday we went to were crazy with activity. as the day, the heat and the weekend went on, the dogs stayed underground more and we really had to work for our kills. it's friggin dry out there. One of our shots started a small fire on some private pasture (we had permission to be there and we got it out right away) be prepared for that if you guys are going out that way

When it gets real bad ranchers won't even let you drive on the grass. We have been told that the cats on cars/trucks can start fires in very dry conditions. I can only say that happened on one maybe two trips.

We stayed on the roads as much as possible. the only time we went out into the prairie with a vehicle was when we had to put out the fire with our emergency water supply(for just such emergencies  )

Wow...I thought our farmland in MN was dry. Maybe I should not bring my special exploding tip Prairire dog rounds and just stick to the high velocity rounds. Thanks all for the info.

Do you have to buy them early or can you get them same day? Do you have to apply or can you just buy them over the counter?

Thanks
