Anyone had a gun duracoated?

Postby jerconstantine on Tue Jul 24, 2012 8:33 am

I bought my wife a ruger sr-22 and have thought about getting it colored. After doin some research, I came across the process of duracoating. I am wondering if anyone has gotten it done to a gun and how does it look and hold up?

Thanks.

I had one done ... and did another, myself ... both turned out well ... no sign of any kinda wear! ... YMMV!

IIRC, Bill's in Robbinsdale is "authorized" to do this!

I dura-coat a lot of guns. It is a tough finish when done properly. The flat finish looks best IMO, the matte and glossy looks like regular paint.

I do both duracoat and cerakote. Cerakote is definitely a bit tougher finish.

Both work quite well however. :)

I bought a Blackhawk that was dura-coated, it looks great and hasn't shown any sign of new wear. I have been thinking of getting a run-of-the-mill '42 mosin done.

I have duracoated my AK and it has held up great other than where the shells eject and hit the edge of my receiver cover repeatedly. I also duracoated synthetic stock on my hunting rifle and had to do it twice since the oils in the plastic caused the duracoat to bubble right after spraying it. Lesson learned, make sure to soak synthetics in true strip overnight before spraying.

cleaning is the key for any duracoat or other finish. Have done a few and all are holding up well.
