Intruder Shot During Home Invasion

TRUMAN, Minn. (AP) ― Authorities in southwestern Minnesota are investigating a home invasion where an unidentified intruder ended up with a gunshot wound.

Police responded to a call shortly after midnight from a rural home near the town of Truman, which is southwest of Mankato. Marcella Sauck called to report that a man in his 30s was in her home and assaulting her husband, Elmer.

Marcella Sauck suffered a broken arm during the incident, and Elmer Sauck was hospitalized with unknown injuries. The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was airlifted to Rochester with a police escort.

Police said they don't yet know a motive for the assault. They found a vehicle with Colorado plates about a half mile from the Sauck home, but are unsure if it belongs to the suspect.

TRUMAN, Minn. - Authorities in southwestern Minnesota are investigating a home invasion in which an intruder was shot and wounded.

Police responded to a call shortly after midnight from a home near Truman, which is southwest of Mankato. Marcella Sauck called to report that a man was in her home and assaulting her husband, Elmer.

Marcella Sauck was flown to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, where a spokeswoman says she's in critical condition. Elmer Sauck was also injured.

The suspect ended when the Sauck's son came over from his nearby home, and the suspect was shot in the led. The suspect was airlifted to Rochester, where he's listed in fair condition and under guard after surgery at St. Marys.

Authorities didn't immediately know a motive for the assault. The Martin County sheriff's office says the suspect is a 30-year-old man who recently moved to Fairmont from Longmont, Colorado. Charges are pending.

An elderly couple is hospitalized after a brutal beating in Martin County by a stranger. Nicole Winters spent the day in Martin County and joins us now live in the newsroom with more. Dion, Authorities say Marcella Sauck woke up a short time before midnight to find an intruder, identified as 30 year-old Douglas Bennett lying on her living room floor. When she went to call for help... the intruder allegedly attacked her...Her husband heard the commotion, he came out to assist his wife, the intruder turned on him and Mrs. Sauck was able to escape and run next door to her sons home.The Sauck's son Mark ran to their home armed with a handgun... when he arrived he found the intruder beating his father.Police say Bennett then turned his attention to Mark...Mark struck the intruder on the head with the gun and that still didn't stop him. He continued to advance. Mr. Sauck fired one round form the handgun, the intruder continued to advance, he fired one more round striking the intruder in the leg. Authorities don't believe Bennett had any connection to the Saucks... and do believe it was a random act... something they say they don't see often. It just doesn't happen down here, it's a very safe and quiet part of the country.Marcella Sauck is listed in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital ... she suffered broken bones in an arm and leg, as well as eye and internal injuries. Elmer Sauck suffered non-life threatening injuries. As for the Intruder Douglas Bennett... he was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester... he's listed in Fair Condition... and is under guard. Police say they believe Bennett recently came to the area from Colorado... and may have family in the Truman area.Authorities also say charges are pending.

Spelling and punctuation aside, it's still a poor recounting of what happened. Did he high the intruder with the gun because he was struggling with dad and he didn't want to shoot dad ( )? If so how did the suspect "continue to advance?"

FAIRMONT, Minn. -- A chiropractor was charged Tuesday with burglary and assault for allegedly breaking into a farmhouse near Truman and assaulting an elderly couple.

Douglas Eugene Bennett, 30, who recently relocated from Longmont, Colo., to the Truman area, entered the home of Elmer and Marcella Sauck shortly before midnight June 10, assaulted them and wasn't stopped until the couple's adult son, Mark, came over and shot Bennett in the leg, the criminal complaint alleges.

Marcella Sauck, 84, suffered a broken arm and severe injuries to her face. She underwent surgery for an eye injury. She was upgraded to fair condition at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester on Tuesday. Elmer Sauck, 89, suffered a broken nose and bruising and swelling to his face.

According to the complaint, Bennett was uncooperative with police and, at one point, claimed he was God and the deputies were "Satan's minions," and that he would haunt their souls for all eternity.

A search of Bennett's vehicle turned up several pieces of drug paraphernalia and a small bag of marijuana, the complaint said. Preliminary tests showed there was marijuana in his system, it said.

None of the Sauck family knew Bennett before the attack.

The charges include first-degree burglary including assault, first-degree assault resulting in great bodily harm, third-degree assault and two counts of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
