Marlin Model 60 repair?

Postby sininja on Sat Aug 25, 2012 7:33 am

I can't believe I have yet again another brand new gun out of the box that has failed. I bought this for my son 2 years ago when it was on sale for a steal. Based on my research I thought I got a reliable accurate easy running rifle. He finally is old enough to try it and after 30 rounds it locked up. My friend got it loose, everything seemed to move fine, so I ran 5 rounds through it. Looked it over again and noticed a lot of metal shavings. I went to send it back to Marlin but I have to pay shipping, or bring it to Ahlmans down in Morristown. I'm not happy about that. Either is going to cost a substantial amount of $$ out of my pocket to fix something that should be free in my opinion. Third new gun to fail on me, I sure know how to pick them. I'm thinking I might as well take it somewhere local instead, probably cost the same and less hassle. Anyone dealt with marlin before? No Ruger 10/22 comments lol, lesson learned.

Have you tried some different ammo? Especially during the break in period of any auto loading firearms, the can be really ammo sensitive.

Also, before shooting these new guns are you field stripping them per your user manual? Firearms are packed in a heavier that normal storage grease. Getting that off, and a quality gun lube in can make a huge difference.

Don't be in such a rush to send the thing back to the manufacturer. Diagnose the problem, a shocking amount are user caused.

I always clean them by the book before use. The shavings are not brass so it's not ammo related. Thanks for the input though.

Less than $20 to ship back via USPS priority mail which I'm guessing is less than what any repair would cost.

Don't write the Marlin off quite yet. If you got one that was built in the transition from the new company owners, you might have some strange stuff. Check out rimfirecentral.com as the guys there know the Marlin 60 inside and out. Pretty cool what some of them have done to them! I have an older Coast-to-Coast 40 that I love, but I go through too much ammo with, so I just stick with bolt guns. But that thing has hiccupped on me so few times, it's unbelieveble. Good luck, and hope you get that little jewel worked out!
