DNC seeks to ban private sales/re-instate assault weapon ban

Postby grousemaster on Sat Sep 08, 2012 8:56 am

According to their newly edited party platform they're coming after us gun toters....

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole – so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

Call me "paranoid, but when a party says they're gonna do something in their official platform, I take them at their word.

Nope I am with you on that. But in all honesty is Mitt much better when it comes to gun rights?

At this point, I can't fathom Romney bein' any bit worse than Bush 'er Reagan! ;)

I'd say the Supreme Court is where our attention needs to be focused! :ugeek:

Then again, with almost another $6 Trillion (more in 3yr, than Bush in 8yr) in national debt, and 1 in 7 Amerikans now on food stamps, I can't fathom anyone buyin' into 'nother 4yr of "hope 'n change"?!

Don't take my comment wrong I will end up voting for the guy cause voting for Obummer is like shooting your self in the arm, to make the pain of shooting your self in the leg, to make the pain of shooting yourself in the foot go away.

That's not that different than it was in 2008. It even includes "individual right" this time around. Looking further back, it's quite an improvement over 2000.

2008
Firearms

We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation, but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact and enforce commonsense laws and improvements – like closing the gun show loophole, improving our background check system, and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Acting responsibly and with respect for differing views on this issue, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.

2004
Crime and violence section...
We will protect Americans' Second Amendment right to own firearms, and we will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and terrorists by fighting gun crime, reauthorizing the assault weapons ban, and closing the gun show loophole, as President Bush proposed and failed to do.

2000
Strong and Sensible Gun Laws.

A shocking level of gun violence on our streets and in our schools has shown America the need to keep guns away from those who shouldn't have them - in ways that respect the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and legitimate gun owners. The Columbine tragedy struck America's heart, but in its wake Republicans have done nothing to keep guns away from those who should not have them.

Democrats believe that we should fight gun crime on all fronts - with stronger laws and stronger enforcement. That's why Democrats fought and passed the Brady Law and the Assault Weapons Ban. We increased federal, state, and local gun crime prosecution by 22 percent since 1992. Now gun crime is down by 35 percent.

Now we must do even more. We need mandatory child safety locks, to protect our children. We should require a photo license I.D., a full background check, and a gun safety test to buy a new handgun in America. We support more federal gun prosecutors, ATF agents and inspectors, and giving states and communities another 10,000 prosecutors to fight gun crime.

wow, misinformed and a discriminating *sshole. I just love how people like you continue to follow the Republican meme of demonizing the Left and blaming everyone else for your problems. You spout BS rhetoric about your guns being taken away when Obama has done nothing of the sort, yet you continue to swallow the lies being spoonfed to you by the Right. You're either incredibly stupid or you're just being willfully ignorant. I'm inclined to believe you're a bit of both. I know one thing is certain, if you morons get your way and Romney is elected, this country is really f*cked.

Of the groups cited, which are more likely, in your opinion, to support Romney over Obama?

That would seem to be a highly arguable point, and not even the country's majority opinion at the moment.

Both parties have outragous positions on hat button issues in the platforms. When in office, they'll do kind of what their friends want. What we need to do is to convince the Dems that their gun stuff doesn't work, and that it's bad politics. The rural Dems get that. Problem is places like Chicago. Most kids in Chicago grow up without any exposure to guns, unless they get robbed or join a gang. So, likely VOTERS, have a hard time relating to their 2A rights.

That's why I don't like people talking about gun rights, and then in the next breath just demonizing Democrats generally. We LOSE our most important supporters (the rual democrats who can change this situation) when we trash talk them.

Gun rights are for EVERYONE, not just right wing FOX talkers. Let's play the game to win, not just to make more noise.
