Looking to buy a new .22 rifle

Postby coltpeacemakerfan on Sun Sep 09, 2012 6:16 pm

Hey there I'm looking to buy a new .22 long rifle, and I've shopped around but have not found anything that really jumps out at me. Any suggestions?

It all depends on what you are looking for. I do alot of plinking and some "Just for fun" friendly competitions. I like my guns, Marlin 981TS, Savage MKII, and the old standby Model 60 :D Find what fits you well and you will love it!

In reality you can't go wrong with whatever you pick. I have a mid 1940s Remington TargetMaster single shot bolt action 22 that I have a blast with. Its a great rifle to plink with, and to take small varmints with as its super accurate. I've owned a semi auto 22 (Marlin 795) and had a ton of fun with that too, although if you want a semi auto rifle I would go with a Marlin 60 as you don't have to worry about mags.

If you like to customize, it's hard to beat the 10-22, there are a zillion aftermarket parts. You can actually build a 10/22 with all aftermarket and no original Ruger if you want. Or get a 10-22 and shoot it stock and it's a great moderately priced gun. They now have a takedown version for easy transport.
A sweet traditional rifle is the Browning 22 Long Rifle semi-auto takedown. Pretty wood, blued steel. The only difference I can see from the one I inherited ~'60s era and a new one in the store is the old ones say Belgium and the new ones say Japan. Mine runs and shoots like a champ, maybe somebody who bought one recently can comment on reliability/accuracy.

Thanks everyone I will look into those kind of guns. I have two .22 rifles right now, one is a bolt action marlin model 18,that needs a little work on the bolt but that is all and the other is a semi auto Remington, but i'm looking to sell them and use whatever money i get from selling them to buy a new .22 rifle.

My thoughts go like this, if the magazine, or feed throat of a 60 is causing problems, it is a huge PITA to fix. Also, the feeding is a bit more complicated on a 60.
If the mag on a 795 is causing problems, you might have another magazine in your other pocket. Or you can find them all over the place.

Regardless, there are so many options for a .22 rifle.
Do you want to bench rest it, and reach out 200 yards?

Ya kind of need to decide how you want to use the rifle before you decide which rifle will work best.

I've had a Browning .22 SA for 20 years. It's a nice old classic. Other than collector value, no difference between the Belgium and Japanese models. I've found it to be reasonably accurate, although not as accurate as any 10-22 I've owned.

I love my Ruger 10/22 Deluxe (checkered stock) with a 3-9x scope. I swapped triggers, but it shoots fine either way. Very fun.

But, I'm also fond of my new S&W M&P 15-22 that I bought from Thunderjohn. A 500-rd box of ammo doesn't seem to last very long when I'm shooting the S&W, and I'm not sure why.... ;)

I can see getting a .17 bolt action some day, but no other .22 trips my trigger.

The big question is what do you want to do with it?

Sig 522. Accurate, different, a hoot to shoot, and M1913 Railed for optics.

Did I mention fun to shoot?
