Calling all Glock Armorers

Postby Ron Burgundy on Mon Sep 10, 2012 8:06 pm

Jgulbs pointed me towards an interesting article http://militarytimes.com/blogs/gearscout/2012/01/01/glock-setup-tips/, How To Make Your Stock Glock Rock. Seems like a good start before I start buying a bunch of aftermarket "upgrades."

Any tips/thoughts from armorers? What are my chances of doing more harm than good by busing out the dremel and polish? What is the best way to tune up my Glocks while keeping them dead nuts reliable?

..as long as I have your attention, thoughts on aftermarket sights? I have my eyes on some warren tacicals.

I wouldn't change anything until your 2nd Glock. Keep the first "functional." 8-)

Warren's look good. I've got Heinie's on my G19 that I'm happy with (black on black). Anything but the original sights should be an improvement.

Dremel continues to keep gunsmiths, parts companies in business.

While Glock is fun and easy platform to experiment with, not being knowledgeable on the minute differences can cause problems. However, if isn't something you have to rely on, it is fun to troubleshoot. Just make sure you are good at labeling and separating all the parts. I keep logs for all modified/parts guns.

Warren tactical sights are used by a lot shooters and they are quality sights. Make sure you understand the size/design differences for your needs.

Keep it safe out there.

I have a couple but only one full size (17) that mostly gets used for steel and USPSA. I like the idea of the $0.25 trigger job a lot better than spending $200 on a new aftermarket one. I don't mind stock sights but I'm looking for a fiber front -- something that really pops.

Solidgun, I'll go easy with the dremel, if at all. I understand you can accomplish the same thing ith an Emory board.

You aren't going to hurt anything with a polishing pad and flitz. For anything more than that test it out on something you don't use for self defense.

When I want to try something new I usually buy new fire control parts. So I have a set of stock parts in case anything gets messed up.

I really like my Warren Tactical sights. However, I have both the WT fiber optic sight and a Dawson Precision FO and I like the Dawson better. The Dawson is a bit longer, pulling in more light, and for USPSA, it comes in a bit narrower, which means a little faster.

I use the Warren Tactical rear on all my Glocks, comp and carry. I use the Dawson front (dawson front FO 019-023) on my USPSA guns, and the Warren Tactical Tritium front on the carry guns. That way, you have basically the same sight setup for both (minor differences).

At Dawson Precision, you can purchase each piece separately and not have any 'left overs'.

Oh, and I run all my guns with stock 5.5 connectors, no polish, just lots of trigger pulls. I add the extended mag release to the comp guns only, otherwise everything else is original equipment.

There is not a whole lot that is going to make a difference on a stock Glock to make it better. There are some things that you should not fool with and a G19 is one of those things.

Does it work? Yup - dont mess with it - use factory parts installed by an Armorer for tune up (That is my Glock Armorers Certificate from 1992 talking)

Want a better trigger? Buy a TARGET GUN not a combat tool.

Sage advice but certainly less fun........unless you can convince Mrs. Burgundy I need a target gun. I think I've been convinced to stick to dry firing.

Dry firing is a good way to seat the parts.

Remember what the G19 is used for - it is a carry pistol that just happens to be about as dead reliable as a machine can be when you do your part - and it is far more accurate than you are (or anyone else for that matter...)

It is about the best gun out there for the $$$.

With my G17 and my reloads, it hits where the dot is, which is nice for the gun games and I like it for personal defense as well. For target/bullseye shooting, I like the 'pumpkin on a fence post' 6 o'clock hold. Glocks are not my bullseye guns

edit to add: If you want to get technical and try to figure out the best for where you want it to hit, Dawson provides a pdf for doing the math here --> http://www.dawsonprecision.com/images/Instructions/FrontSightHeight.pdf

I'm just a rookie armorer, took the class last spring.

I've got a 34 that I use for games. It probably has 3000 rounds through it from me. I first tried the lighter Wolff springs and guide rod. Didn't feel much of a difference. A couple weeks ago I installed a Ghost Rocket connector, I think it was around $25. It requires some filing, the connector has an extra tab that limits over travel, and you have to file the tab down till the gun works. It made a BIG difference and I like it so far. I probably have 300 rounds through it now, no problems.

Along with the connector you need a slide cover inspection plate so you can release the firing pin and get the gun apart while you are getting the connector fitted.

Leave them stock. If you really would like a lighter trigger use the Glock "-" connector and stick to factory parts. IMO the stock glock triggers are plenty good for a defensive or carry gun use.
